In 1931 my husband's grandparents honeymooned in what is now the Boundary Waters. The groom's dad went along as a guide. He slept outside and the newlyweds got the tent.
They covered some serious ground--lakes visited include Insula, Agnes in Canada, all the way to the eastern side of Sagagna, and probably back to Ely.
We found these pictures while visiting my in laws over Christmas. Enjoy!

Mocha: "that is so cool! so, did they have 2 canoes? and a camera and not much gear for that length of trip."
I imagine just one canoe. Given even my father-in-law's views of appropriate tasks for women, I can imagine *his* father and grandfather would have Wilma sitting in the middle of the canoe for most, if not all, of the trip.
The camera was likely Wilma's -- we found scrapbooks from when she was a teenager, too.

onepaddleshort: "Very cool! The photo titled "North on Lake Agnes" looks like a rental canoe from Sig Olson's Border lakes Outfitting. At least it looks like the logo to me."
Oh, I wondered about the logo on the canoe! But that makes sense since John (the groom) was friends with Sig Olson and and was a guide with his outfit.

So cool! They covered some serious ground with some serious loads.
The 'guide' looks off to the side when a picture is snapped of him & his catch.
Love to look at old black & white photos like these.
Thanks for sharing.

There's just something special about old black and white photos. John must have been a rugged guy, if that's him with a pack AND canoe on his shoulders. I took a wood canvas Penn Yann to the BW in the early 90's. Carrying just the canoe made me 3" shorter. Also be aware this was the day before light weight camping equipment. So cool! Thank you for sharing.

Truly wonderful pics. Thanks for sharing. I think few of us here have the stamina and will to travel as they did. I know I could not do so now and probably not even when much younger.

Great pictures. Looks like your family comes from hardy stock! Handsome couple! I am not even that old and it makes me long for the good old days ( minus the heavy gear) ;)
Without the bad times, the good times wouldn't seem so good.

It doesn't get any better than that! Just think, no permits, no designated camp sites and for the most part, no border either. People crossed back and forth all the time not worried about licenses, limits or what they could bring in. We sure mucked that up!
