walleyewood: "2018 BW Crappies!"

I hear about crappies in the BWCA but I never think about them when I am up there. What lake or part of the BWCA did these come from? They are good too eat, might be easier to get than walleye's depending on the season?

Nope - early June. 1 week annual trip to the BW. Eyes first, then whatever else is biting!

Crappies.......most everyone I know considers them a good eating fish. When I lived in Michigan as a full time resident we hit the crappies hard both summer and winter and thought they were delicious.

Then I moved to Florida and excellent fishing for crappies on the Big "O" which is just down the block from me. Don't ask me why but crappies caught in Florida are terrible and basically not fit to eat IMO. The texture is very soft and mushy, blah!

And bluegills are as thin as a rail. A 9" bluegill in Michigan is a fine and proud fish with condsiderable shoulders and healthy filet. Florida gills are basically not worth the effort, very skinny. The exception is the Shellcrackers, a type of bluegill which excels in all aspects, fighting ability, size and table fare.

We caught many, many gills mixed in with this bag of crappies (original pic posted) and they were monsters!

Also our group has a bubbler is it a bad idea to take minnows in? Caught some on plastics last time I was there but thought minnows would help catch more.

We caught a bunch of very large crappies when we were there. I attached a map, there are three black dots, that’s where we got them.

Not easier to catch than walleyes, in my opinion. Just something to try and catch if limited out on eyes or something to do for a couple of hours in the event the 'eyes are slow for a day.

Warm Water Crappies...not good as you say...Throw them on ice for a few hours, it helps.

Our Kansas crappies get that way in the summer but are great in the spring and winter.
