As most of you know by now, Canoecopia 2019 will be March 8th, 9th and 10th in Madison, Wisconsin. As of this posting, Canoecopia 2019 is now just 38 days away. Traditionally, the Saturday night of the Canoecopia weekend is also the BWCA.com member dinner. As in years past, the dinner will be held at Angelo's Italian Restaurant in lower level of their restaurant known as “The Grotto”. This will be the 7th consecutive year we have held the dinner at Angelo’s.
Angelo's is approximately 3.5-miles from the Reliant Energy Center - the location of Canoecopia and Clarion Suites.
Angelo’s Italian Restaurant
5801 Monona Drive
Monona, Wisconsin 53716
Aside from indulging in some great food and drinks, it's also a great occasion to socialize with other BWCA.com members and to associate some faces with names. It’s a great venue for sharing past trip adventures and other BWCA.com topics with other members. The annual dinner has spawned many canoe trip plans each year as well.
In order to make planning easier, and to give Angelo's a realistic head count, please indicate if you are attending and how many friends and/or family members will be in your party as soon as reasonably possible.
Cost:
$20.00 for those 12 and up
Children 5-12 are $10.00
Kids 5-years old and younger are free.
The aforementioned prices should cover the costs of the food, state tax and tips. As I did last year, any additional money collected over and above the cost of the dinner will be donated to the BWCA.com website. Dinner fees will be collected at Angelo’s the night of the dinner.
Traditionally, most members arrive around 6:30 PM, with the food being served around 7:00 PM. There is a full cash bar with a dedicated bartender for our group in the lower level as well.
See you there!

There has been a fire at Angelo's
From their facebook: As many of you have heard, Angelo’s Monona had a fire yesterday. Thankfully nobody was hurt. Unfortunately will be closed indefinitely. Fingers crossed for reopen in March. Looking forward to seeing you all soon.
That said, count me in for 2 adults and one child. :)

nojobro: "By the way, I have emailed HansSolo about the fire and told him I can help with finding a replacement venue, if we need to. I live in Madison. The fire just happened yesterday so we will see if they find out more soon"
Thanks nojobro,
I received your email. The fire at Angelo's is very unfortunate for numerous reasons.
I'll contact Patrick, (the owner of Angelo's), next week regarding the status of the restaurant. I'm sure he has bigger concerns with regards to the damage and reopening the business right now. That being said, I'll give it a few days for the dust to settle, so to speak.
Nevertheless, we'll monitor the situation and make adjustments if necessary.

I recently received an update from Christine at Angelo's regarding the status of the restaurant after their kitchen fire. Without prompting, Christine sent me this email message.
Hi Mark,
I just wanted to give you a heads up about your reservation of the lower level on March 9th. Today we had a fire that was contained in our kitchen. However our pipes also burst and there was flooding throughout the restaurant. We have clean up crews starting the work. We are being told at least a month, but could be longer. I can keep you posted as to our estimated reopening, but can’t promise anything. Do you want to keep your group in the books or plan something else??
Apologies,
Christine
I responded that I would in fact like to maintain our reservation in hopes that Angelo's can re-open and be operational by March 9th. That said, I also informed Christine that I will look into a few other establishments as a back-up plan in the event Angelo's was unable to be back in business.
With Canoecopia 2019 and the BWCA.com dinner now less than four weeks away, I plan to touch base with Christine later this week to see how the clean-up is going. I will also update everyone about the status and location of the dinner once I know more.
Regardless, if Angelo's is not up and running by March 9th, I think I can come up with an alternative venue.
To be continued......

This just in. Doctors want to do surgery next week so canoecopia is out for me. Can not handle the hip pain any more. Right now it is worse than it was before I had it put in. You all have a great time.
I will get all the rest I need when I am dead.

Just a brief update. I was recently informed by Angelo's that because of the extensive water damage after the kitchen fire, Angelo's in Monona will not be operational until April.
I have made several inquires during the past week and at this point there are a few options. I will post an update in a few days after I receive additional information and I'm able to work out some of the details.

Sorry it's now unexpected extra effort but thanks for doing it. Very appreciated.

If you find a place big enough for two more put us down. I owe Butthead some beers for hooking me up with replacement o-rings for my fuel bottles for last summer's trip!

Alright gang, I think we are good to go!
I still need to work out the menu details, but we will be holding the BWCA.com dinner at 'The Roman Candle Pizzeria' at 2623 Monroe Street, Madison. There are several locations throughout the Madison area, but the Monroe Street location seems to work best. The Roman Candle is approximately four miles from the Clarion Hotel and the Alliant Energy Center. The only caveat is that it's street parking; not as convenient as Angelo's in that respect, but doable.
The owner and manager are currently working on a menu that fits our budget. I described the details of what Angelo's had offered us in the past and asked if they could keep the individual cost to $20.00 per person as Angelo's did.
I also like to thank NoJoBro for her research and input with finding a new location this year. After contacting several establishments in the Madison area, 'The Roman Candle' seemed to be the closest venue that was comparable to Angelo's. This is a new venue for all of us, so I truly hope 'The Roman Candle' will serve us well after the temporary loss of Angelo's.
Here's a link to the Monroe Street location and their menu offerings.

I will update this thread if any new information or changes occur.

Dave, it will be good to see you again. We met and played leap-frog on a trip out of Mudrow in Sep 17. You are the one that encouraged me to join the forum!
"
Hey Steve,
I think about that trip and your helpful weather advice often. I was just telling a class of 4th graders (retired teacher, now subbing) about that night on Moosecamp when you and I were the only two there.
See you there! (I'm still short and my hair's still white, you can't miss me.)

fraxinus: "Parking shouldn't be a problem, one block East of the Roman Candle is Wingra Park, (great little put in for paddling Lake Wingra) probably has 30 or so parking spaces. "
Thanks fraxinus, that should make things a little easier.

For the record, the BWCA.com dinner at Angelo's Italian Restaurant on Saturday night has been cancelled. They were very understanding. I let them know that we'd be booking again next year.
