I was looking at tents on rei.com and saw this tent for 40% off. That's about 170 for the 3 person tent. From what I could find, it looks to be an REI exclusive for 2019. The question I have is if this is any good.
I was looking at 3 and 4 person options, like the REI half dome, Marmot limelight, and MSR elixir. They all seem to be in the 300-400 range. The Windy Point 3 is closer to 300 before the discount. Would I be disappointed in the Windy Point of I was comparing it to the other tents I mentioned?

Compare
Looks like a heavier fabric/pole 3P tent at a very good price.
I own a HalfDome 3, and been inside Limelight3, MSR Elixir3, slight design differences in frame construction. All good shelters. Gets to individual details for choices, cost, pack size, pole length, frame design.

Is there any downside to a polyurethane waterproof coating? Even at the max weight of 5lbs 7oz it just doesn't seem that heavy. Maybe heavy for backpacking, but I don't feel the need to go ultra light in the boundary waters. I've seen other tents that like the limelight 3 that are 6-7lbs, so I don't feel like this one is very heavy at all.

A buddy of mine just purchased one - he said his initial overview is that it seems very durable and easy to set up. At that price, I am thinking of picking one up myself. I have 2 BA tents (which is why I do not need a 3rd) and they all have held up very well. And at 5.5lbs packed weight, that is very light.

Most of the weight is made of fabric vs netting in the body, far as polyurethane coating it's an old standby. Still used it may add some weight, works well, biggest drawback is longevity. Poly coating is more likely to de-laminate and flake off over time, sometimes a long time others fairly quick. I think it has a lot to do with prep and application, also it can be influenced by VOC's in the immediate atmosphere during storage.
I do not think it's much of a difference between the listed tents in actual use.
Biggest differences is fabric vs net ratios, and frame construction. Windy Point, Marmot limelight, use simple 2 crossing pole with a spreader. HalfDome a hubbed 2 pole and spreader. MSR 2 double crossing poles and a spreader.

At that price how can you go wrong?
a spacious tent (7.75' x 6' x 46" H)
a reputable maker
two doors/two vestibules
Go for it. If ya don't like...it'll be an easy resell considering the discount.
Pole set-up is exactly that of my older version Limelight 3 and overall weight is about 1 lb lighter than limelight 3. About 5 mins to set up.
No ground cloth included but a 7'x 5.25' piece of tyvek would suffice.
I'm thinking it's an REI exclusive listing and they just want to be rid of this model to make room for 2019 inventory. Always, always new tent designs & configurations entering the market each Spring.

I dont see that on the REI site. Only the 1 and 2 person. Looks like a nice one.
I was looking at the North face Stormbreak 3 or the Nemo Galaxi 3

I purchased the Northface Stormbreak 3 at REI for $148. The only thing I liked about it was the price. Doesn't compare to the Big Agnes or Marmot in quality or design in my opinion. Yellow one in the middle.
