Has anybody used this in their canoe?

At my age, I need back and butt support.

We carried something similar for our duffer to sit in the bottom of the canoe on a 30+ day trip. It really helped. But I have never used anything like this on top of a canoe seat.

The Sitbacker seat is a great choice.

There are a number of similar items on the market. Make sure it has straps to secure it to the seat, and that it is not much wider (front to back) than the seat it will be used on or it will not be stable for the user.
The Wenonah Super Seat is a good choice.

Can this one be adjusted so it is flat? My wife likes to use one for added padding/insulation while sleeping.

+1 on the Wenonah Superseat. I have a couple different Wenonah seats and they are all great for back support.

Best to contact Wenonah on that. I have a different brand that is very similar. Mine does not open flat.

I use an Academy Game Changer stadium seat and won't get in the canoe without it any more. It's very well made steel and canvas and folds flat and doesn't weigh that much. I laid brick for 45 years and my back can't take being in a canoe seat very long without support. It fits the seats on our Old Town perfect, it has a metal rod that's L shaped that folds down and slides right under the canoe seat like it was made for it. Best $ 40 I ever spent. I would pack it on any trip and leave something else if needed, it makes all the difference between really enjoying yourself or being uncomfortable and in pain.

I used one of those cloth seats that strap down and don't have any metal in them and I was miserable the whole trip. The Academy stadium seat changed that, I can't say enough good about it.

I use just an economy type seat I picked up at the local store.
It has small pouches for keeping things in and is great for sitting back with all your weight.
I do not rely on the devices or straps on the seats themselves to keep it secure though. I run a ratchet strap through the seat bottom and tighten it down.
This keeps it super stable and secures it for portaging as I do not remove it from the canoe the entire trip.
You can see part of the bowman's in this pic.

So how do you guys use these things with your pfd?

I've only used a seat for one trip. The pfd I was using (which was rented from an outfitter) had padding in the back...enough padding to where it made it uncomfortable to wear while using the seat. This incentivized me to paddle without my pfd at times, which I don't want to do anymore.

At this point I will probably be leaving the seat at home unless I can find a pfd that works with it...any ideas?

The seat is very much like the ones being discussed in this thread.

I bought Cabela brand inflatable vests, the ones with the cartridge in them. You can buy automatic or manual inflatables, your choice. The great thing about these vests are there is nothing on your back other than around the back of your neck, they inflate on both sides on the front of your chest. They are comfortable enough that you will wear them all the time. No need to leave the seat at home and your protected. Win Win.

It's never been a problem for me. I Have a Stearns vest that has a fairly flat foam back panel. Fact is the seat back seems to work it's way between me and the pfd much of the time. In any event, it's not an issue for me.

Try a kayaking pfd they are designed with more floatation to the sides and front along with a higher back to work with the seat in a kayak.
