As the subject reads, I'm interested to know if the BWCA community has any experience with the Daiwa BG series? Reviews are very positive and the price seems competitive for build and features. The one downside I can see is the weight, but how noticeable will the extra ~2oz be (eg. Pflueger President and Supreme)?

Daiwa BG Spinning Reel

Look forward to hearing on feedback.

Regards,
Paul

I'm a big fan of the BG's. Have several in the 1500-4000 series. Mostly used for saltwater because of the rock solid drag, smoothness, and low price. Use them for trolling and casting big baits on freshwater too. They do feel bulky compared to other reels. 2-3 years of abuse on each no issues.

Don't think I'd buy another for freshwater. Diawa Fuego, Shimano Sahara, Pfluger in that order for me anyways.

This is helpful, as I'd most likely use for freshwater only. Not to mention most if not all freshwater fishing is out of a canoe or from shore. What size Pflueger would you compare to the 2500 series in the BG?

BGs have huge spools, hold a ton of line, and have more pounds of drag than most competitor series. That may play into your fishing preference. In the BW I don't put much value in line capacity or stopping power when targeting eyes probably why they are not high on my list.

For what it's worth, I absolutely love my Shimano Nasci 3000 spinning reel. Price is great. Nice and lightweight, smooth as butter and solid drag. After 2 seasons with it, I'm thrilled. I got the 3000 becuase of the T style handle. It will likely be the only reel I get moving forward as older ones give up the ghost.

Those BG's look pretty aweomse as well. Not sure you can go wrong with those!

I've beat on a BG 3000 for Lake Sturgeon ice fishing all this winter. I've been impressed. I haven't tried anything in a more typical freshwater size, seems like the 3000 is more like 4000 in say a Shimano reel. I'd guess a 2000 BG is about like a 2500 Shimano. Anyway seems like a great reel so far, definitely some advantages over the Daiwa SS Tournaments I continue to fish (which are also great reels)

I was a Daiwa guy in the 70's and switched to Shimano in the 80's and am now back to Daiwa. I find the build quality better and they hold up. I still have a Stradic that I like but anything less is not so great. For what it is worth, I have never had a Shimano that wasn't great out of the box. They just didn't STAY great. To take into consideration though, is that I used them all mostly in salt water. Perhaps in fresh they would all hold up better. Daiwa is decent value in any case.
