Heading up to the mid Gunflint in a couple weeks for 4 days.
My daughter wants to catch a trout. I 've found info on Lake trout but was thinking we would hit some of the rainbow lakes as well in the area.
Are they fished for similiar to lake trout as far as structure ? Also burbot is on her list of fish she would like to catch. She went to the eelpout festival on Leech but no luck any mid Gunflint worth a nightime fish for them?
Thanks,
Dave

Fish for rainbows close to shore. I’ve fished for them in as shallow as 2 ft, rarely go deeper than 10 ft. I literally only use tiny northland jig heads tipped with euros or waxies. Pink, orange, or chartreuse are good colors. Small jigging spoons, same color are good also. Supposedly gunflint lake has good numbers of eel pout.

Mink and kimball Lake are designated Trout lakes that not very far up the Gunflint Trail. They are on the Trout Lake Road, which is also a Lake that hold Rainbows and Lake Trout.

Can be a blast, for sure. Tiny baits, waxies, 2-3 lb line, and hold on! Although next year I'll also be trying some with the smallest Rapala Jigging Rap available. Guys will say that green can be the magic color in stocked lakes as that's the color of the pellets they feed to them. I am always skeptical about how shallow we fish them (maybe 5-7 feet of water with baits just under the ice) but "shallow locations with deep water nearby" is my son-in-law's mantra, and it has often paid off.

Mink, Kimball, and Leo are all rainbow lakes. Start shallow. Use tiny little bluegill-sized jigs in brown or orange tipped with a spike or waxie. If you catch one, cut it open and use a bug out of its stomach. Tons of fun, you won't need to go deeper than 10 or 12 feet like walllee says. It is fun to set up in 4 or so feet of water and sight fish 'em.

I don't know if you'll find anyone who targets burbot up there but good luck.

Thanks all!
Might get her a burbot collaterally fishing lake trout.
Can't wait to try for rainbows. I had no clue where to start for them but thanks to all you great folks I've got direction on them. Will post some pics after the trip.

Thanks again,
Dave

Those burbot up the Gunflint taste as good as any fish.

The season For trout closes the 31st as long as you get on the water before then you should find rainbows shallow in the upper 5 to to 10 feet no matter how deep of water you’re fishing over. Since trout are nomadic just pick out a likely looking spot and call them to you no need to chase them around. Keep in mind lake trout season is closed.

Thanks for the help going this weekend (Fri to Mon) . Staying at Rockwood and pumped looking at the forecast . Hopefully foot travel conditions will be good.
Anyone have snow conditions on the lakes.

Based on the snow map on DNR website, as of last Thursday, most of Cook County is still covered with about 24 to 30 inches of snow. They’ll update the map every Thursday. Hopefully it’s considerably less, as I’m going up there on Monday.

Thanks all for your insight!
We had a wonderful time and great weather on the gunflint. Foot travel on lakes was excellent.
We had to work to catch some Lake trout but my daughter caught her first a small one the first morning and a 15" on day two and lost an even better one on day 3. Everyone said the lake we were fishing is one of the tougher ones. Have to try some others next year. Rainbows were really fun....really fun. After the am fishing for lakers being fussy the rainbows were really aggressive biters when they came thru and had a good catch of 12 to 15.5 inch fish. We ate lakers each night wrapped in tin foil with butter and lemons. I've never been up the gunflint in winter so it gave me a different perspective and I can't wait to return in June for my Quetico trip.
Thanks again for all the help cutting the learning curve and sharing your knowledge. My daughter Heidi says THANKS also.
Best regards,
Dave
