I am planning a trip in mid July, entry point 40. Will be traveling/camping on Baker Kelly Jack Peterson Lakes. Looking for any advice on fishing these lakes. Fishing with family, small children, hoping for some eater walleyes. Thank you for any fishing tips you may have.

I didn't fish a lot when I was in the area, but did OK nonetheless. I was there a little earlier than you, but conditions should be roughly the same.

Lots of moving water around portages in those lakes, most of the lakes seem like they are basically wide rivers for the most part. Anywhere there is a portage with moving water, fish it. Leech and a jig, or on a hook with a bobber will work.

Look at topographic maps before you go up there and get a general idea of depths, etc. July, fish will have moved into a little deeper water. I don't recall these being very deep lakes, but you should be able to find fish on breaks to deeper water. Tannin stained water there so harder to eyeball the depth changes, but should be OK especially on sunny days.

Good luck!

Bigfish...you said entry point 40, is that really correct? If so you are certainly taking the long way to get to The Baker/Kelly/Jack lake area. And passing some good water on the way. EP 39, or even 38 would be much easier.

If you are really going in on 40 I would recommend staying on Vern for a day and taking a trip up the Vern River. Beautiful scenery and great fishing for walleyes and smallies.

If your goal is to camp and fish in the Baker Lake area (which is very scenic, good fishing and known for moose sightings by the way) you might want to look at entering somewhere different. Or not.

Ducks took his young daughter up there ona daddy/daughter trip a couple years ago and they did very well on walleyes, hoping he responds.

Yes, we are using entry point 39 at Baker Lake entry. Thank you for the correction. Also, thank you for the fishing advice!

lindylair.... the pressure is on for me to help ...LOL... :) I love helping people put kids on fish :)

My oldest duckling and I did a trip in June a few years ago when she was 9 entering at Baker and camping on Jack. It was best fishing I've had on a daddy/daughter trip and we saw lots of moose. We saw moose on Peterson, Kelly, and Jack. There were 2 sets of cows with calves and a Bull hanging out on Jack while we were there.

Jack has 2 campsites.... the southern one is up on a hill on a point and is very nice. The next one is actually back in the bay instead of on the northern point of the bay like most maps show. That is where duckling and I stayed, but it is not a very nice site. Low, closed in, buggy, and not a good place for swimming.

We caught walleye at the pinch point right where Jack narrows down to a river again on the northern end of the lake heading towards Weird. Many maps show the 2nd campsite right at this spot but it's not there, it's actually back in the bay before this pinch point. We had many doubles and we were catching them so fast that I stopped fishing and enjoyed watching my daughter smile while she caught a walleye on every cast. Slip bobber, plain hook, and leech is what we used.

Off the portage from Kelly to Jack on the Jack end there is a trail that leads to an old mine.

Photos of the not so nice site on Jack and fishing fun...the pinch point is behind duckling in the stringer pic...

I fished Jack for a couple days around Labor Day once. I assumed the walleyes would be deep so I started out there and got nothing. Moved up to the weed edges and did well using leeches

I'll add...... I didn't fish these 2 spots but I've heard they are good....

On Peterson where the water flows into Peterson from Kelly there is a pool that had daytrippers from the Baker campground catching walleye when we passed through. Also, where the water flows into Kelly from Jack near the northern Kelly campsite and portage to Jack is a good place to fish.

I knew Ducks would come through:)

So now the hard part is over, all you have to do is catch them!!
