We started out with a nice morning paddle at our entry point. We were paddling along mid-morning and one of us looked up in the sky and there was a huge sundog. Thinking nothing more of it, we went merrily on our way. As we went back for our second load on a not too long portage, we noticed the quickly blackening sky to our west. As we reached the other end of the portage we debated the relative merits of heading to the one campsite on this lake. We decided we would rather be where the wind was blowing into camp than where the wind was going to blow trees down on us at the east end of a portage.
We packed the canoe and made a mad dash across the lake to the campsite. We had just enough time to unload and stow packs and stash the boat between enough trees that we were relatively certain that it wouldn't blow away. And it hit. We couched between rocks as we heard limbs and trees crashing down in the forest behind the campsite.
When it was over, we were unscathed, but we saw the downed trees throughout the forest on the rest of our route. We also spent the next day wind bound. Even though this was a relatively smaller lake. The next few could have been problematic. So we stayed for another day.
As best I remember, this one is looking WNW.
This one is looking mostly W.

Michwall2: "Airmorse wins with Little Shell. "
I'd like to thank my manager, my producer and director, all the fans, my family...oh wrong speech...
I'll post a picture tonight.
I can't believe i got that right...totally shooting from the hip. I have stayed on the only campsite on that lake and loved it. Caught a 28 1/4 inch walleye fishing little shell.
