I just got an etrex20x to replace a Lowrance unit that had been beat to death for years and was acting up. This unit is definitely not as user friendly but is light and compact with very good battery life. My question is how do I mark a waypoint at the cursor position? Is this unit even capable of that? It has been a long time since I've had a unit that did not have this capability so I hope there is a way. It is great to mark campsites etc. before you go.

YouTube tutorial and others will get you started. I think you will get used to it quickly finding it easier that first thought.
It's capable of mostly what larger and more expensive Garmin units are, just with a smallish screen. I believe you can make and install customized printed/scanned map overlays with Google Earth. They do take mico SD chips, working with some other map programs like Red Pine.

Thanks butthead. It isn't that I'm inexperienced with GPS, both handheld, marine and auto. I just have not had a Garmin handheld for a long time, and could not for the life of me figure out how to mark a waypoint at a cursor position. On my Lowrance unit I simply moved cursor to position and hit enter twice. I did finally figure this thing out after watching about 5 videos and reading multiple GPS websites. You move cursor to position, hit enter, which brings up a screen with the coordinates and a red GO. If you hit enter you just get a route to that cursor position. You ignore the go and hit menu and then get the choice to mark it as a waypoint. Not complicated at all, just different. I feel stupid now, lol. Like you said, I am finding it easier than I first thought, Garmin just has a very different way of navigating the menus than I am use to.

Yeah, on the Garmin 6xxx series handhelds, it's MARK then ENTER. Can't tell you how many times during a fish fight that I'll forget the ENTER.

I'm pretty sure you just depress the cursor button for about two seconds. There's also a mark waypoint command in the menu.

I have the 30x and, other than an electronic compass and barometer, it should work the same.

I find these units to be optimal in the sense they are compact and have excellent battery life. I don't care about mapping GPSs. The detail is just not adequate and the constant map re-draw is onerous on the battery. I just need a point to shoot for and the compass screen. I like to know my speed, distance, and ETA to the next waypoint or destination. But it's all a matter of personal taste.
