Need a new sleeping bag for my daughter for a late June trip and looking for a little advice. I have an old Cabelas Boundary Waters sleeping bag. No idea what the temp rating is, but I'm pretty sure it's goose down. Packs great and has been plenty warm enough for trips I've been on. I went to get another one and found out they don't make them anymore.

Any recommendations for a good sleeping bag for late June?

Big Agnes has a few Kids versions, BA Kids I was impressed with the Duster 15 at Copia. it is length adjustable (roll the bottom to length, secure with the loops), with a pad sleeve to keep them on the pad. Almost bought one for my littlest grandson.

I own 2 of the rectangular down bags in different weights. They can be used as single bags, zipped open as a blanket, or zipped together for 2 people.

FYI, if you're an REI member they have a pretty decent sale starting this Friday on several of their Big Agnes sleeping bags, they're going to be marked down lower than you could buy one with the 20% coupon. Personally I'd go with a synthetic fill for summer and to have a bag that dries faster if it gets wet.

Mountain Hardware has a big sale going on now. I just ordered one for myself. I know don't anything about their bags, but as a company they have a great reputation.

This is the AegisMax that I have.

They are definitely sewn through. They are a nice cheap option for summer bags when it might get cool but not cold.

Would not trust them to their rated temp would go 15-20 degrees higher.

Price of AegisMax is up $5 from when I bought it.

To the OP: Would pick a bag by how old your daughter is. If she is young, go cheap and take a liner that can boost temp rating. That might be a good option for the AegisMax. If she is older, then look for more quality.

The bag on the left is sewn through construction and the bag on the right is baffle construction.

I've got a couple Northface bags that my kids use. Both are synthetic and rated down to 30F. There a Cats Meow and Lynx. I upgraded to a Northface Blue Kazoo (down) a long time ago that's rated down to 15F.

For most June-August trips I take my Mountain Hardware Lamina which is a +40°F bag. I usually just leave it open and pull it over me.

If you or anyone you know has some basic sewing skills, I'd consider making a quilt. I'd actually like to make a down one to use instead. Smaller, lighter, and just as warm.

I'm a huge fan of Big Agnes sleeping bags for kids. I chose to buy women's bags for my 9 and 12 year old girls. The sleeve keeps the pad centered without which one of them was always waking up on the ground. June - August I can't see them really getting cold in anything you buy, but a quality bag will last them especially if they use a liner. My 9 year old rarely uses anything but the liner July-August. Bought both bags used for around $50, look like new.

I have 2 Aegismax rectangular sleeping bags. The one in the photo on the left is sewn through construction and the one in the photo on the right is baffle construction and has more down fill. Price and temperature rating are different, both pack down in similar size compression bag.

Comfort rating:

Sewn through construction - High 63 degree - Low 54 degree - Extreme 24 degree

Baffle construction - High 55 degree - Low 46 degree - Extreme 15 degree

I just ordered a pair of 20º bags for my boys ages 8 and 9. I got them from Outdoor Vitals for $38 and change each. I will let you know what they are like when they show up. I didn't want to spend a ton and though I have read some mixed reviews on Outdoor Vitals I figured I would spend the same at Wall-Mart for a heavier bag. I ordered them with right and left zips so they could zip together should it ever be needed.
