I'm looking for advice from somebody with Clearwater Lake experience. I'd like to do a day trip to Gogebic and am wondering how long it would take paddling. Or, alternatively, renting a 10 hp and self-towing, ditching the boat, portage in. Is it a viable day trip option for me, or is that a young person thing?

I think it depends on what you consider a "day trip" and how long you want to fish gogebic in my opinion? Clearwater is what, 5 miles out, 5 back? Depending on wind, you might spend 1.5-2.5 hours paddling each way?

I am personally trying to decide if I will tow a canoe all the way across CW to the portage, or just hike over to Gogebic and attempt to fish it via shore. The ascent up to Gogebic can't be very easy carrying a canoe.

Summer hours get going by daybreak you will have plenty of time for all you want to do. Otherwise make it a easy over nighter on Cleawater and day trip into Gogebic

Only thing if you had strong west winds coming back.

I have an 8 hp you can use. It’s nothing fancy but it gets the job done. If you want to use it let me know how to contact you. I have not been able to log into this site. The mods must have decided to weed out the riffraff a year ago.

Listen to a couple of the Tumblehome podcasts, they know (and describe) that area like the back of their hand.

clearwater is about as long as seagull and thats usually a 2 hour paddle maybe a little less and as we know the wind on lakes like clearwater/pine can be nasty if in the wrong direction,
for a day trip i would definitely use a motor , just carry your rods and tackle up to gogebic will give you a good 1/2 day + of fishing , hopefully the shale rock campsite will be open , a descent shore fishing spot.
if you stay after sundown say hi to all the mice ;)

Kevin! Or should I say Casper? Thanks for the offer. I might have to take you up on that. Maybe you could climb aboard and we can whale on those specks together.

Here's a trip report on Gogebic area. Shangri-la up along the BRT

The last site - east side of Clearwater is a very nice site if you can get it. Good fishing and swimming spot too. Also, there is a spur back behind camp that links up to the BRT (and thus Gogebic) so you could hike up right from that camp.
