Looking for views on why you use the type you do. I like the thin line of braided line and high pound test line, but tying the knots is very slow when switching from crank baits & spinners to jigs or 3 way for walleyes or smallies. Tying knots with mono is quick, but what pound test line do you use to cover fishing for northerns and walleyes?

I've fished with mono my entire life. As a general rule, when going to the BW or Q, I have 8# Trilene on my jigging rod and 12# Trilene on my trolling/casting rod. I'm not sure that 4# makes a lot of difference from one to the other - the largest pike I've caught was on a jig - but that's how I do it. Easy enough to tie knots, the knots hold well and probably most importantly, I'm used to it and know what to expect.

A month or two ago, I asked a question about Fireline, etc. in this forum. Was thinking about using that on the trolling/casting setup. We'll see...

I use 8# mono for everything, trolling and casting. As Jackfish says, it's what I'm used to using. Rarely has 8# not been heavy enough. Take your time if you hook something large. If you lose the fish, catch another.

You could always just put a 3-4' mono or fluorocarbon leader on and have the benefits of both. I run Fireline on all my rigs. If northerns are a worry I would use at least a 25lb fluoro leader.

8 lbs. Berkley XL Smooth Cast in green color in the BW. Been trying some of the Stren Magnathin in Walleye color (green). Still not enough comparison testing......will have to get out on the water a lot this year to determine! The Berkley is less expensive by a couple bucks a spool and will be hard to convince me to replace. Just read good things about this Stren product and wanted to give it a shot.

I also use 8# mono for the bdub, Fireline (braided) is much better for strength, lack of stretch etc... but what truly is the point? Like paper cuts, fireline cuts suck, and snagged is snagged.....

8 lb Mono on the slip bobber rod.

20-30 lb braid on the “other” rod— which gets different test and length of flourocarbon leader depending on the application. (Maybe 15-20 lb for trolling big lakers or pike, but 8 lb for jigging walleye etc. This rod gets used for trolling, jigging, casting, drifting. Basically everything that doesn’t involve a skip bobber.

I’ve become the master of tying a double uni knot in the dark. ;)

For BWCA I use 8 lb Trilene XL mono for Walleye and 17 lb Trilene XL Mono for Pike. I also like to put some heavy Spectra line on my baitcaster I use in Canada for big Pike.

I have trilene or mono, 6 lb. on my spinning rod and 8 lb. on my bait casting rod. I'm going to switch to 10 lb. braid on my bait casting rod this year. I use the bait casting for trolling and hopefully I'll have less misses while trolling as braid doesn't stretch s much. Also braid casts better.

10-15# PowerPro braid to a 5-6' fluoro or mono leader tied by an Albright knot.

4-8 lb XL mostly. I take a reel spool of fireline or power pro but it doesn't always get used.

i'm mainly a mono guy , trilene XL because it is popular and good and the equals to fresh line on the shelves.
on my winter pike tip ups i've moved to #20 XT trilene leaders , with much success .
if i'm casting bigger lures (1oz-3oz) and targeting muskies i use power pro #50, a modest musky set up.

Mostly braid for me with a mono or flouro leader. If I'm jigging and/or at risk of snagging often, I'll use mono, mainly to avoid having to retie the leader so often.

Plenty of strengths of both options, that's for sure.

I like 12 lb. suffix braid (green), but I'm almost always trolling or throwing cranks/spinners. Palomar knot can be tied as quickly as the improved clinch (standard fisherman's knot) once you're good at it. I hate losing fish, especially big fish. I've never broken this line and only been bit off a few times. You can also cast it a country mile; put on a spoon or #5 Mepps and let er rip!

The lack of stretch lets you pull smallies out of brush or walleyes out of rivers without letting the fish control you. Just make sure to always set your drag or you'll break your rod or damage your reel. I've done both.

The line is rather expensive, but it doesn't seem to break down by UV rays like the mono does. Not for kids either; if you get a rats nest, you usually have to cut it... and that sucks when the nest is 50 feet down the line.

Fireline #8-10 on everything but panfish reels, with the caveat that I don't do much walleye fishing, mostly bass & pike. I really like the toughness of braid & that it doesn't start looping on the spool like mono.

Both, sort of.

I use 6 or 8 lb Yozuri Hybrid copolymer for jigging, Lindy rigs, and casting smaller spinner baits or plastics. By far the best line for these applications IMHO. My crankbait, fluke, and topwater choice is 10 or 20lb Spider braid. I fish creeks most of the year and I use braid almost all of the time. I have used fluorocarbon leaders with braid and find no advantage in creek situations. I do use mono with a titanium leader for musky/pike. I do not understand the love for Trilene XL. Worst line I have used. I do like Trilene XT and use it in 6lb on occasion. Find what works best for you and stick with it.

Trilene XL clear . 4 lb for crappie, brookies, rainbows, 6 and 8 lb test for Walleyes depending on conditions . For Northerns and Lakers 12 pound test.

8 lb green power pro with 10 lb fluorocarbon leader for everything... 3 feet of leader. I bring three rods and just have different presentations for each. I ALWAYS tie a uni knot on everything... It is easy for me and I don't have to learn multiple knots. 1 rod is for jigs, 1 for spinners or spoons (with a swivel), and one for cranks.

I use P-Line CCx Xtra strong in the Quetico. Some of the toughest mono you will ever find. Very little memory, and virtually invisible if you get the green color. I use 6 lb test, and rarely if ever get broken off.

I also use the same line in our rivers here in Michigan for steelhead. It is top notch.
