Hello, first post here, but long time BWCA traveller. I found an historical map for sale on Facebook marketplace and I am hoping to learn more information about the map. The seller had some family connection to the firm that produced that map and he said he had at least 10 at one point, but this was one of his last ones. The bottom of the map reads " Enlarged Section No 3 pf C. & S. Map Scale...For sale by Architects & Engineers Supply Co. Duluth Minn. " The lower left corner of the map has the name "Spoeri" and the lower right has the name "Cassady." If anyone has any information about this map or company it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I bought this reproduction of a map made by that company at Piragis in Ely. They still offer it. It’s on page 12 if you search in their site under maps. It covers the area from the Vermillion River on the west side to Gunflint Lake. Larger than shown on their website. It was described in their print magazine years ago as being reproduced with coffee and other stains included.
Maybe someone at Piragis, (Steve the owner) maybe would know about the company.
It’s $14 now. I see the cloth version was $2.50 in 1928.

It would be great to see the whole set.

Very neat. I might have to make a call up there. I found on the MN Historical Society Webpage this map that shows a larger area but online I can't seem to find anymore individual enlarged sections.

Cool maps. I *love* looking at maps, especially old ones. Kind of neat to see where the blank spots are, too.

My father had some connection with A&E Supply, possibly employment there. I’ll see if my sisters remember.

Meanwhile, here’s the backstory on the company:

Many of you likely know about these Aerial pics but just want to be sure. I know in some areas they go back to the 1930s, but those are not on line and think they are held only at the National Archives in College Park, MD. I live nearby that so next time I am there for other project ill take a look how far back the holdings go.

I was able to contact one of the grand sons of the founder of A&E supply and he said that the company was sold to St. Paul Book and Stationary which was later sold to a company called Corporate Express which was based in Colorado. This company was eventually acquired by Staples.
