Hi,
I'm considering selling my Old Town Penobscot 16 because I don't use it as much as I'd like. Thinking about upgrading to a kevlar canoe. I bought it new in 2013-2014 and it is in pretty good condition. Some scratches on on the bottom but has been stored in the garage mainly. Does anyone have an idea about the value of a boat like this?

If it’s Royalex then the canoe should be worth what you paid for it since Royalex canoes are a thing of the past and still in demand.

I'd say 50 - 80% what you paid for it. Ask the higher range. If it doesn't sell, go lower. I wouldn't accept less than 50% of what you paid for it.

I bought an Old Town about 5 years ago for $325 and sold it last year for $400. The Royalex canoes are popular right now and sell pretty quickly. I was honest when selling mine that was in good condition and just said that it wasn't a great fit for me due to the weight and how short it was. The guy that bought it wanted to take it on the river, launching straight from the back of his truck, so it was a perfect fit for him. Royalex canoes are great on rivers due to their toughness and lack of a keel so they aren't affected as much by the current. If you target your audience a little, you might be able to sell it quicker and for a bit more.

Thanks to the advent of T-Formex Royalex doesn't command the premium it did a few years ago.

True, but they are still nice boats and a more affordable option. I would think 1000 would still be a fair price.

Kinda like selling real estate. $999 psychologically might work better. Once you get to four figures you get the buyer hesitation kicking in.

Usually 60-70 percent of the new price will lure a buyer.. Watch out for those Nigerian banks. They will pay more.

Yes, absolutely. Royalex Penobscot is a great boat and it sounds like the Wongster's is in near new condition. My comment had more to do with the once actual but now mostly only perceived market premium for Royalex.

Good point, Kim. I have seen ridiculous prices on royalex canoes after they quit making royalex. By the prices and some of the descriptions from sellers, you'd think royalex was spun of the purest of materials dropped from heaven and made in a palace by virgins?

I've bought and sold a couple, actually THREE, nice kevlar boats for less than 1K. I'm certain I've never spent more than $800 for a used royalex canoe, and a few were in excellent condition. Like cars & trucks, canoes depreciate from the minute they leave the lot, that's just the way it is. I may "Ask" for something in the $900+ range, but would take less. That's just my opinion, though.

Time to sale depends a bit on your location and the price you ask. On craigslist in the cities, royalex penobscots at $600-700 seem to sell fairly quickly. One listed at $1k has been sitting for a while. I agree, $1000 is not an attractive number. $995 or even $1050 puts it more clearly in the three or four figure ballpark.

P16 is a great boat. A boat in truly like new condition, posted on a warm sunny Saturday morning in spring might get a buyer at $1200. Wait until late summer and interest drops like a rock.

T-formex is exciting and all, but used boats are rare and new ones are $$$$. Used royalex in good condition seems to be about 25% less available each year.
