I have read here on the fishing forum about "shoulder season" and I'm wondering what those days are. Someone mentioned that the bugs aren't normally bad during the shoulder seasons. I'm just trying to plan for which bait to use and what gear to bring for fishing.

Also, are the bugs bad during the 1st week of June? We went a few years ago the first week of June and had zero issues with bugs, but we also had 5-10 mph breezes the entire time so there's that. Just wondering.

Thanks
SG

Shoulder season: Think of the human body, then compare to the main paddling season. The chest/torso = June, July, August. That makes the shoulder seasons May, September, October. Hence the terminology.

First week of June is not real bad for bugs... but it depends on a lot of factors, especially your own tolerance. Fishing can be at it's peak which tends to offset bugs bugging you.

I generally trip in August. Although the fishing may not be peak it's still very, very good. Usually it's just a matter of adapting to where (depth) they are at and adjusting your presentation accordingly. The one thing I like about tripping later is that the bugs are pretty much gone by then. This can be an important factor especially if you like frogging around in the woods a little as I do.
Safe travels........

Appreciate the responses. I will keep my bugshirt handy just in case and use some of the "early season" lures and Quetico Mike's recommended softbaits... Looking forward to hitting the lakes this Summer.

Thanks
