I am taking a group of 4 kids into Brule Lake this year on their 6th trip into the Boundary Waters. They are now teenagers so I feel comfortable bringing them into a larger lake. I am looking for fishing tips to get these kids on some walleye, depth, location, bait. We will likely be camping on the eastern side to stay away from the big lake. I have never been on Brule so any advise would be welcomed. We will be there in mid July, fishing mostly slip bobber & leech, with occasional jigs & Rapalas.

Hey Wolfman, I'm not super familiar with the eastern end of Brule, but I think the structure of the lake is fairly consistent, so the general idea should be the same.

If you can get a campsite with western exposure and a 5-10 foot hole off of rocks, you guys should clean up (I say western because of the predominant wind, but play the weather). If not, just look for any wind blown point with rocks and deep water near by. Brule has a notorious evening bite; it is like clock work. Start out fishing deeper in the evening, but the fish will move into the shallows as the light fades. Do it backwards in the AM; that bite can be just as good... but doesn't seem to be as consistent.

The current breaks between islands are also good spots to set up shop in the evening.

I usually use slip bobbers and a bright colored 1/8th oz. jig with a leech. However, if the fish are being finicky, try a red hook with a small split shot.

During the day, those same fish will be in 15-25 FOW. Try to find some humps and anchor up between them... or again, deeper water between islands. You can still use slip bobbers or jig them; just depends on the kids' comfort level.

You can also troll shad raps, walleye divers, or reef runners in the afternoon. Come from deep water into the points; that's a good way to find bigger fish. Be careful though; it's easy to get too shallow and find some boulders.

Hope that helps, good luck!

Brule Island is a good campsite for access to the east side of the Lake. Vernon Lake is very accessible from that location and an interesting portage. There is a small stream that runs adjacent to the trail, flows underground and comes cascading down the hill into the Lake. The fishing in the riffles used to be good for large Northern Pike, but very easy to access from the landing, so has likely been heavily fished. It was a good Pike lake and some told of catching walleye. I saw that it was stocked with Lake Trout, but DNR sampling wasn't that good for this species. We usually fished in the Spring, so I can't attest to the mid-Summer catch. Echo Lake is also a good short portage from that area. The fish are going to be deeper locations, but we have caught Walleye in mid-July slow trolling the shoreline with spinners and live bait attached. Some claim that the night bite is best on Brule, but I just can't help you in July.

Brule bay baby!

We had good fishing there when we brought the kids along.

It was also a great area for other reasons... which kept the kids entertained.
