It is that time of the year when new people are searching this site for information on fishing Quetico and the Boundary Waters. In the past I have offered to share my fishing articles with the folks on this forum. If you would like to read any of the following articles, just send me an email at - queticomike@yahoo.com - and request the articles you are interested in reading. Good luck this year!
Article listing:
Grand Slam Lures - an article about basic lures for the 4 major fish species
Zulu Magic - fishing soft plastic jerk baits for smallmouth bass
Tubing smallmouth - fishing for smallmouth bass with tube baits in late summer
Bronze trophy - fishing for big smallmouth and the different phases of the fishing seasons
Topwater smallmouth - topwater lure fishing for smallmouth bass
If you have any questions, just send me an email.

AdamXChicago: "Unsolicited shout-out to QueticoMike. My fishing experience has significantly improved ever since I started paying attention to his posts and articles. Hope all yours does as well.
Thanks again, Mike."
You are most welcome! I try to help out as many people as I can with their fishing, be it up in the woods or local waters. That's what it is all about, helping out your fellow fisherman. I'm more than glad to help! I have had many people requesting fishing articles via this website, general email requests and Instagram over the past couple of weeks. Actually had a field editor for In Fisherman TV, Gord Pyzer, request my Zulu Magic article a few days ago. Gord does a lot of the ice fishing segments with Doug Stange. He said he could be contacting me in the future regarding a possible interview. I told him I was willing to do a BWCA or Quetico segment sometime for the show.

Have to agree with the other posters here. I emailed Quetico Mike last year before our trip and he sent me all of his fishing articles. I bought nearly every lure he recommended and felt confident that we would be successful.
The Zulu Method works really well. I was the only one in our group of 6 that used it and did very well with the SMB in August. I didn't have much success with the topwater presentations of the Lucky 13 or some of the others, but I'll definitely be trying it again this year.
Really solid advice in those articles. Thanks for sharing, Quetico Mike.

The Lucky 13 is more of a quality fish catcher than a quantity fish catcher. So you might not catch many fish with this big lure, but typically when a fish strikes this lure it is a big fish. If you are just looking for more action and not necessarily a trophy you should downsize your approach and throw a Super Pop-R. I like the Foxy Shad color. Cast the lure and let it sit for a minute before you move it. Or wait until all of the ripples from the lure landing on the surface subsides. Then a couple of pops of the lure followed by a long pause. If this doesn't produce, increase the speed of your retrieve by reducing your pause. Let the fish tell you if they like a slow or fast retrieve.

overthehill: " I don't even go without a zulu rig (or shadz) for the last few years. Thanks again QM. oth"
You're welcome! It is the best rig I have ever used in the Quetico! I started using this rig in 2006 and nothing has out-fished the rig over the length of a trip since then. I would never go on a trip without this rig. It is a fish magnet. Just wish I would have known about this rig back in 1988.

Add me to the list of people saying thank you as well.
I emailed Mike last night requesting 3 articles, and all 3 of them were in my inbox early this morning.
I was busy all day today, so only had about 5 free minutes all day, but managed to read 1 of the 3 articles so far, and it was very enjoyable. I think I may need to add a few black and gold Rapala J-9's to the arsenal, as well as a gold husky jerk or two. My #1 confidence bait has always been black and silver or purpledescent, but I think I may have to add some gold Rapalas to the arsenal as well.
Anyway, thanks for being willing to share your info, Mike, and for getting it to me so quickly.
It is much appreciated.

I had several people try to email after I left for my trip to Quetico requesting articles and I was unable to send them their requests. If you are one of those people, please send me your requests again. I should be available to send out articles for at least the next 60 days. Good luck this season!
