I currently have 13 days in Quetico and 7 days in the BW planned, but 2 of those days I won't be fishing. Typically don't fish on the last day of the trip, usually just packing up and getting out on those days. I might try to squeeze another trip in during the summer.

Right now I've got a total of 12 days in the BW across 2 trips. I hope to fish every single one of them (at least a little on entry/exit days). I may make a weekend trip in the fall but I will be focusing on the scenery at that time. Of course I'll still bring a rod though. :)

Quetico- 10 day trip in early June and a 7-10 day trip in September
BWCA-7 day trip in July
So I guess 24-27 days total. Most, but not all, will be fishing days. Retiring 2 years ago at 52 has been an amazing blessing! I just dread the 900-1000 mi drive, ugh.

4 or 5 days, all in Quetico. Depends what the water/weather is like on our first day, if it is like last time we went there is no chance (wayyy too rough to fish, had to concentrate and put too much effort towards keeping the canoes moving forward).
Then I'm hoping to get out on the water at least 30 days between next weekend and Labor Day, but that will be in Illinois/Wisconsin/Upper Peninsula.

10 days in May, 10 days in Sept. This will be my first time in BWCA. Haven't fished since 1965 when my Dad took me on a fly in up to Ontario. I have memories of shore lunches, lots of fish, rain, and snags. This forum is my only source of info, I don't know anyone who fishes the MN lakes. Thanks all!!

IndianaFishin: "Only 7 days in the BW. June 1-7. Basswood via PP. Moose chain. Staying w/ the Vosburgh's. Wish I lived closer than 17 hours away! Tight lines and bitin' mouths to all!"
You must live at the very bottom of Indiana if it takes 17 hours or maybe you don't live in Indiana? It's maybe 12.5 hours on avg. from Indy to Ely I would guess.

I will be using Williams and Hall next door for bunkhouse stay the night before my trip to Quetico and tow to PP. If you see Ohio plates on a black Ford Escape that reads QUETICO in the parking lot, that would be me :)

For our BW trips, I leave just south of Indy around 4:30 AM, and we're checked in to a bunkhouse (Ely or Gunflint) by mid-afternoon.

Sadly, 0 days. For now, my Shield fishing days are done. Sigh. However, there is a little 155-acre lake a few miles from here that nearly no one fishes. It has largemouth, brook trout, white perch, yellow perch, and pumpkinseed. It does have two long-abandoned cabins on its shoreline. They're kind of sad, so saggy and moldy.
Say, Mike, thanks for all the threads you start. it keeps bwca.com lively!

We are right at 12 hours from just north of St. Louis on the Illinois side.
We are planning on seven days starting on May 19th this year. Any advice on fishing that early, Mike?

Many factors to figure out what to do. What are you fishing for? What are the lakes like that you are fishing? Large lakes or small lakes? How deep or shallow are the lakes? What has the weather been like the two weeks leading up to the trip? Above normal, below, average temps? What are the water temps on the lakes you are fishing? What kind of weather fronts are you experiencing when you first arrive?
Not knowing any of this I would suggest look for moving water. Try to find spots where smaller, warmer lakes are feeding into larger, colder lakes. If you aren't finding fish in the lake you are fishing, maybe it is too cold, seek out a warmer lake. Maybe you are fishing for trout and walleye and you want to find colder water? Remember the north sides of lakes typically warm up first. Fish wind swept shorelines. Fish main lake points. Find mid lake humps, reefs, and small islands and fish them. Fish between islands in the saddle. Look for areas that will funnel wind and produce moving water between two land masses. Fish structures like downed trees or any irregular features. Look for monster pike in the back of coves warming themselves and feeding on small bait fish. If fishing seems slow, slow down your presentations and move to jigging twister tails, hair jigs or tubes.

We are headed for fish stake narrows / lady boot bay on LLC. It is a really big lake. Do you think that is a mistake? We are targeting walleye and trout early in the trip, however, we really like fishing for smallmouth and maybe pike as well.
