So, my crew and I are heading to Snowbank over Memorial weekend again this year. My mission is to get into the walleyes this year. We did fine for lakers and bass but last year was a swing and a miss for eyes. I found walleye in 3-4 ft of water on a reef after dark, with eyes reflecting everywhere. I threw everything I had at them but no interest. What is the secret to catching eyes on that lake that time of year? Time/presentation/location? Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Fairly simple starting point. Live bait under a slip bobber, and stay as far away from the structure as possible to avoid spooking them.

Did you try a suspending jerk bait?

Tried everything. Live bait, jigs, lindy, crankbaits casting and trolling. Was fishing the reef I saw them on from a ways away and only saw them when I was starting to head back to camp. I assume with the water clarity there it is strictly a night-bite?

Great advice. Cold water equals slow fish. Crank baits and trolling will be too fast as walleyes are not aggressive enough to chase bait. Slip bobber and leech, or jig and leech worked slow is your ticket to walleyes in early season.

Thanks. Structure type? Depth?

Sounds like you already know where the fish are at and what the structure looks like by your description.
In early spring I tend to find most of my walleyes in shallow moving water, main lake points, and muddy bottoms, 10 to 15 feet deep with emerging weed growth. If you know areas that are typically weedy in the later parts of the year, fish those areas early in the spring when the weeds are just emerging.
I typically catch most of my walleye on a Gulp Leech on a black and yellow 1/8 oz jig head. Vertically jig over the muddy, emerging weed growth areas.

Thanks QM. That is most helpful. Just the kind of intel I am looking for. Good luck this weekend to everyone if you are heading out for opener. Hoping to head to Burntside with my daughter to try out my new graph.
