I just purchased the Yakima Keel Over. Those are for hooking to cross bars or in my case, a larger diameter expedition type cage around my Jeep Wrangler. You hook them to the bars and in addition to having a softer surface for the canoe to rest on, it prevents side to side movement.

I've carried my canoe on my cage twice. Each time it was a process to strap it in so I felt I would not get any movement. These things will make it much easier. I'll put my canoe up there and use the included straps. After a few times I'll cut the straps to not have to wrap them all over the place. I carry a few extra straps with me so if I happen to need a longer one, I already have them.

I always liked Yakima stuff and have used it exclusively for decades. It is well designed and well made but very pricey. So I always buy it during the several annual 20% off sales. Also, check craigslist for what you need, however many people appear to over price it. I have always been able to sell my used Yakima stuff but only for modest prices.

IMHO they are VERY good on larger racks and non-standard racks both round and flattish racks. But, not as crazy about them on the standard Yakima round bar. We haven't really used them since we got my wife's Jeep Renegade so I think I'll put ours up for sale when I have time to mess with it next week? Let me see if I have a pic of our Keel Overs in use? And we DID use tie downs in front and back lest anyone try to lecture me!

BTW, Wondermonkey, still looking at Jeeps. Test drove a new Rubicon the other day and it's like a Caddy compared to the old Jeeps I've driven! But, I'd need to start a "Go fund me" account to pay for it (LOL)!

I got the Sport model and upgraded the sound and one size up on tires. Not Rubicon tires though. I'm so pleased with it I'd buy it again. Do do like the comfort things on models above Sport, but not so much that I appreciate them versus the cost. Also, though I don't abuse my Jeep Wranger, I do treat it like one, and would not want to do that if it was all tricked out.

But yes, they are expensive!

I would have been smarter to have waited, but watching my canoe wobble back and forth worried me so I used some of my accumulated reward points with a particular store and paid for a bunch of it. Probably still over-paid, but I'll put it to use here soon.

I just pulled them up on REI and looked at the reviews. I forgot I have a review on there (LOL)

This is the option we went with, made by Yakima for the round bar, and 50 bucks cheaper;
LoadStop, RoundBar
T-Slot Load Stops
SKU: #8005000

$69.00

If it fit the cage around my Jeep, that would have worked as well.

Round tubing. Not sure of the actual diameter but it's what is around my Jeep below.
