Looking for advice on how to keep night crawlers alive. Leaches last longer but want both options. What is a crawler canteen ?

Keep'em cool and out of the direct sunlight. But not directly next to dry ice as I killed some that way back in the day. Crawler Canteen>? Sounds like a small fabricated box that holds dirt / bedding. For the long haul-something like that will work better, but for one trip into the woods the plastic deals work fine.

Careful using dry ice, the CO2 can also kill the crawlers if kept long enough without opening the lid.

The 'canteen' is a "press board" box (with a plastic frame) that you pre-saturate and KEEP damp in the shade. The size of a shoebox. I think "majic" bait company still makes them. I have kept 5-7 dozen very fat and lively for a week the last of May. Evaporative cooling is wonderful. Don't drown them but keep that press-board good and damp. Wet burlap helps too. A very damp box in the shade with a little air movement does wonders for me. I like crawlers!

Bury your main container of crawlers in a area of deep shade, top of lid about 2-3 inches below surface. Cover with wet moss morning and evening. Put heavy rock on lid or they will squirm out.

I took crawlers for the first time last August. I got them from VNO. They give them to you in a styrofoam container with damp peat moss on top. I was told to just keep the peat damp and keep them in the shade. It was pretty warm the whole trip. I ended up packing live crawlers our with me. Did really well with them. Just cut them in half and drifted a single hook spinner rig. Walleye dinner every night!
