Did i read somewhere that with the new LNT video(s) we are supposed to get a notification (email to everyone in your group ) from the USFS to watch the videos prior to picking up our permits.

Or am i having a senior moment.

I was wondering the same thing. I have received no emails to watch videos.

The trip leader should get the first two videos via email in advance. Although, I'm not exactly sure how far in advance. The third video should be watched when you pick up your permit. They had planned to also email the first two videos to any alternate leaders but that has been scrapped, at least for this year.

Thanks.

I guess we will see if that works or not. We leave in a few weeks and as the T.L. I have received no emails.

The links to the new videos are in the reservation details of my confirmation email for my permit.

I am not the trip leader. I have no plans to be there when the trip leader picks up the permit. The trip leader and I planned to simply rendezvous at the entry point which is nowhere near where the leader plans to pick up the permit the day prior. How's that gonna work? Can I watch the video online before I go. Can I go to the outfitter that is issuing the permit and watch the video at a different time than the trip leader? Please tell me that I don't have to be present when the leader picks up our permit.

From my reservation:

Watch and Share – The BWCAW Video
As a wilderness visitor, you have an important role in protecting the natural integrity of the BWCA Wilderness. This video, which is the first in a series of (3) videos, provides information important to the early stages of planning your wilderness trip.
Watch and share the all new video series with your group, then check out the BWCAW Trip Planning Guide and the Forest website for more details.

BWCAW Permit Requirements
Permit is valid to enter BWCAW only on entry date at entry point specified.
Permits can only be picked up on the entry date or one day prior.
Only Permit Holder or verified Alternate can pick up permit (photo ID required). Leader must stay with group for entire trip and ensure that all BWCAW rules and regulations are followed.
Reserved permits must be picked up at issue station specified. Office hours vary, so plan ahead and allow extra time to discuss wilderness preservation and current conditions."

I appreciate the link to the videos but that doesn't answer my question. I am not planning to be present when the trip leader picks up the permit. The link you shared says this "The Forest Service has now created three videos. The first two videos are sent out before you pickup your permit, and the last video will still be required to be watched by your group when you pickup the permit". It says that the group must watch the third video when you pick up your permit. Again, I won't be there at that location at the time the permit is picked up by the leader. In the past this really wasn't a big deal as only the person picking up the permit was required to watch the video. Now it seems that all members have to be there to watch the third video. Just curious if this has been discussed.

If you are listed on the permit as one of the participants then you need to be there.

Good info. Since only the leader needs to be listed on the permit, then I guess the workaround would be for me to not be listed on the permit. That way I don't have to be there when the permit is picked up. I'll watch the videos at home.

But this seems to defeat the purpose of the videos if only the people listed on the permit are required to be present to watch the third video and only the leader needs to be listed on the permit.

HEY......I just got off the phone with the La Croix ranger station asking some questions, so i figured I'd ask your question.

The answer shocked me. NO you do not need to be present when the trip leader picks up the permit. In fact if you wanted to enter a day early you can self issue at the ep a day use permit then meet your group when they enter.

Howzz about them apples...

Thanks for asking the question to the ranger. Very interesting.

One part of me likes that answer because I will not always be present when the leader picks up the permit.

Another part of me thinks this system defeats the purpose of the permit videos which is to educate ALL campers who are entering the wilderness. It seems too easy for most campers to avoid watching the permit videos if their names aren't on the permit

Of course I'll watch them online before I go....but most will not.

That is what I said.

The person i spoke to said that the trip leader is responsible for ensuring that all participants view the videos b4 entry.

Doesn't sound right. A day use permit does not permit overnight camping. I'd check with his supervisor before I tried that.

I agree that it sounds inaccurate.

It might be a misunderstanding. Of course a day permit is only good for the day. Not allowed to set up camp. That's pretty straight forward.

As far as all parties needing to watch the videos. There are numerouse situations where all parties cannot be at the issuing station when the permit is picked up. Perhaps we can only hope that a majority of parties in the group are there and then when someone starts peeling birchbark off a tree, the educated campers can instruct the ignorant one to stop immediately.

If the response was worded slightly different.......

"In fact, if you wanted to enter early that day you can self-issue at the ep for a day-use permit then meet your group when they enter."

Perhaps that's what agent intended to communicate? Speculating, of course.
No implication about overnight with only a day-permit when it is stated as such.

The verbiage at the link was added by someone here at bwca.com and is WRONG.

ONLY the person picking up the permit will be required to watch the third video at that time.

And anyone who thinks they can camp overnight with a self-issued day use permit between May 1 and September 30 had better bring some extra cash for the fine ...

I watched the new videos last week when I picked up a permit. They are much better than the old one.

Watch them if you can, and if it works out, have your entire group watch them too.

I just hooked up with the links to the videos in my reservation and they are indeed much better than the previous iterations. Very nice to watch.
