I have a Yakima rack on tracks on my truck cap. I need a little more clearance for some boats. It uses Skyline towers and Jetstream bars. It has #1 landing pads currently.

Anybody know which landing pads would work and give more clearance?

Would adding foam spacers between Jetstream bars and boat provide the clearance you need? I realize that wasn't the question you asked but, it seems there should be a cheaper, simpler solution than changing out rack components.

Good Luck

No, it wouldn’t. I’m using the Keelover kit too.

Dooger, I don't know if you can find any Yakima components that will raise the bars higher off the cap, if that is what you were wanting.

I attached permanent landing pads, towers, and two crossbars to my truck camper shell. But I found that with an extended cab pickup, it put the canoes further aft than what was necessary (and created a clearance problem of the bow of the canoe over top of the truck cab). I got a pair of Q Towers and clips specific to my truck and installed another roundbar over the front doors of the truck. That way, the higher bow of the canoe, when upside down, was in front of the windshield. I then only used one crossbar on the camper shell, and the canoe was more centered on truck.

Just a thought,
Joe

Thanks! Only issue I see with that setup is the cab and bed twist and turn independently. IMO, and MO only, that causes twisting of the canoe. I drive too many nasty, rocky, tight Canadian two tracks to use that setup. On the highway or maintained service roads, I think it’d be fine though.

Yakima makes all kinds of landing pads, I just need to figure out which ones I need.

Really? How much do the cab and bed move independently? Never herd that. How fast are you traveling on those twisty roads? I use a cab and Topper set up as well. I just edited my post. I do see from Mike Rowe's video how the cab and bed will move independently on really rough road. Something to consider if I ever travel in those conditions.

I use the mounts where you have to drill into the cab for the foot pad and put the slider strips and two towers on the bed. (I drive my trucks a long time.) That gives me three tie downs for hauling at highway speeds or windy days. Mostly I just use the bars on the back of the bed and cab for local transport. There is about 1/8th inch gap from gunnel to bar on the middle bar when loaded, but the load blocks prevent shift.

While I have heard of twist as a concern I have no reason to think it should be a concern unless on some of those Canadian roads and then just slow down. If I am getting tossed around we are going to fast...and that has happened, too.

ack.. I have an old Yakima system with high towers ( Q I think) that allowed for us to put wooden spacers in.. We put fake raingutters on the cap too. I don' t think those are available anymore.

They have served us well on several trucks with caps.. We too added a third bar on front in case we have to travel with a really long boat.

Our Tundra for sure did twist. We live on a logging road and washboards and collapsed holes were the norm. With some wooden canoes we would have smashed them. Its not about speed it is about surface.

Check with Piragis for fake rain gutters. They carried them in the past and may still have some in stock. Maybe 10-12 yrs ago I got four from them for $20 or so.

Update: Yakima got back to me and basically said I’m SOL. They don’t offer anything that will work.

Scrap the KeelOver kit. It seems to be a barrier to a simple solution. Use foam blocks thick enough to lift your boat.

Might have to. I was thinking about that earlier. The longer boats don’t cause much of an issue with the Keelover; it’s the Northwind Solo mostly.

Wow. Very nice collection of hulls there. Is that a Mohawk on the truck next to the sawyer? And what’s the top boat on the passenger side of the trailer?

I think the white one on the passenger side was a Summersong? The badly beat up heron blue Flashfire on the trailer is one I refurbished for my wife. Joe and I had a friend whom was one of the persons whom tried to resurrect the Sawyer canoe company around 2002 or 2003 as I recall? This friend had an incredible fleet consisting of multiple Kruegers, Sawyers, Placids, Bells, Mohawks, et al.

Ozark, were the owners who tried to resurrect Sawyer from SE Michigan?

Mick lives in Arlington, VA, DC suburb. There were two other guys he never named so not certain? Piqua, Ohio is where they began building them again. Didn't last, though, doggone it. Another friend of ours has a Sawyer Solo 14 from that venture. I believe it's the 2nd boat on the rack on the drivers side. And pblanc here on the forum took the top boat on the drivers side, which was a Flashfire with two holes in it from shipping. He did an impeccable job fixing it good as new!
