It is technically not boundary waters, but I am wondering if anyone has fishing tips for Lake Vermilion for early season walleyes. I am going with my dad this Saturday, May 18. I am not very familiar with the lake. Does anyone have experience fishing Vermilion this early in the season? Thanks everyone
I do not know the east end very well, but do know the west end very well. The Oak Narrows area is where I concentrate my fishing in the early season. Find current and you will find walleyes. Many areas close to Timbuktu landing fits that description.
On the east end Pike Bay is good early in the season. Not sure if they will have dispersed from there or not by the eighteenth. I have also fished out of Timbuktu and done well early fishing mud flats in wolf bay.
I will second Pike Bay for May walleye fishing. Fishing off the point and towards the center of the bay from the Hoodoo Point boat landing/campground is always good in early season. Based on water temps locate the depth of the fish and hone in on those areas. The narrows leaving Pike Bay have good rock structures to fish around as they start to leave the bay. I can't believe water temps will be warm enough by May 18th for the walleye to head far from Pike Bay. Big Bay water temps last weekend were at 45 degrees and some reports had people catching in 20'+ of water even though spawn was still finalizing.
