I did the Manitoba fishing opener this year. I was greeted by cold but sunny skies. The bite was ok but it was late post spawn and not as good as I hoped. After leaving Big Whiteshell I never saw another sole until I returned. Whiteshell PP is a beauty but it is a fly-in fishing mecca in the summer and snowmobilers paradise by winter. If you ignore the boat caches and years of accumulated litter it is a real gem, especially in the in-between seasons. The cross Canada Canoe Route goes through there. It has the look and feel of WCPP and it is what the BWCA would be if it was not protected. My dad and a few friends leased an old fur trappers log cabin back in the 50s and 60s on Echo Lake and that is my connection. I was able to go there in 1969 as a 12 year old. It is there I feel closest to him.

This is one of the few trips I have been able to really slow down on. I will try do a full trip report later. Here are a few pics.

A snowmobile warming shack on the portage into Echo. I spent the one cold rainy, windy night here.
