I think they work pretty good. Calm is great, but if just a slight breeze, I set it on upwind side of fire grate seating. In morning, after breakfast, I set it alongside of thunderbox. By the time dishes are washed , everybody can get through their morning "duties" bug free. Last one at the crapper grabs the thermacell.
"What could happen?"

Based on a couple of BW experiences with the older, non-USB non-rechargeable normal-batteries design, I will cast a minority vote 'no.' A buddy had one along and each night we watched (through our head nets) swarms of skeeters spending some time walking around on the unit and then happily landing on us.

adam: "I haven't used this unit but I have used the original portable one on many trips.
Works great in a small radius and for trips the latrine."
X2. I've had great luck with my original unit. It won't cover the whole campsite but for personal use I recommend one.

My wife is a genius! We constantly had a problem with mosquitoes, sprays and other devices for us were disgusting or not convenient.
She found one device on the Internet, a lamp on electricity, we take a small battery or batteries and this is enough for our camp. It emits more heat than a person, so everyone flies and roasts from it on electricity :)

we use a thermacell in our vestibule - let it run for half hour before getting in the tent at nite, and another half hour after being in the tent.
I know we probably shouldn't.....but its sooooo nice to exit in the middle of the nite without getting mobbed by skeetos (and letting a couple dozen inside).
we use about one butane and a couple pads on a ten day trip doing this.
Very mixed results using them in the open.

I am thinking about buying a Thermacell Patio Shield so we can enjoy lobster boils outside.. Right now the blackflies are party crashers and mosquitoes are starting up.
Its not too expensive.. I found the original Thermacell a real bust even in the calm At Liard Hot Springs in northern BC the mosquitoes crawled over it. But for $25 I will give the patio unit a chance.

Patio shield works 'just ok' unless it's dead calm (which happens never).
I use the 36% permethrin from Amazon, diluted to 1%, and spray the patio and all furniture after the sun goes down. Once it dries overnite, that reduces bug activity for weeks.
