In testing my two Sawyer water filters (the gray and blue gravity bag type), they were running sluggish. Since I back flush when getting home, I was not sure of problem. A quick flush did not help much and I struggled for a while with the problem. My brain eventually unclogged and I vented all air out of the line, and the filter, too, by pouring water from top hose to fill the unhooked filter and then reconnected all with no air getting in. Reattach while water is flowing for good results. Problem solved.
Even so, I plan to get a personal filter as a backup.

Interesting you say this. I was de winterizing my camper and after adding water to the tank the pump continued to work. Kind of freaked out for a bit that I had a leak but was told that air cannot compress which... long story short seems similar to what you are talking about.
