Last year I encountered the Mayfly hatch on the 3rd week of June. Kind of made fishing a little slow but we still were catching fish. I'm going in on the 15th of June this year and hoping the same thing doesn't happen. Last year was the first time I've encountered this problem and I go the same time every year.
So what is the average time of year for the Mayfly hatch? What has your experience been?

My buddies and I go nearly every year in the third week of June. Only once in the last 20 years have we had a really big mayfly hatch during that time. It was pretty impressive. The entire surface of the water was covered with dead mayflies.
It also may have been one of the best weeks of fishing we've ever had. The bass were gorging and hitting anything you threw.

I usually go in around June 20 and I can't remember when I didn't encounter a mayfly hatch. I'm not sure how it affects fishing. Last year I was catching walleyes throughout the entire hatch. The year before, not so much. I think the mayfly hatch is only one factor in why the fish don't bite.

GBTG: "I'm with bassman some people think the fishing stinks when there is a mayfly. That has not been my experience. The more mosquitos and mayflies the better the fishing, it's all part of the fishes food cycle."
I'll third this. I've only experienced two hatches and the fish fed like crazy.
I will paddle eternal, Kevlar and carbon.

About 12 years ago 2 of my buddies were in their boats with 2 other guys, and me in my boat with 2 buddies fishing on Mille Lacs. It was about 8pm fishing by Big Point in about 6 feet of water. We were bobber fishing off the bottom and catching hardly anything. Mayflys were all over the surface. One friend decided to put his bobber out with no jig or sinker, just a plain orange hook with a leech 6 inches under the bobber. We ended up copying him, and pounded the walleyes.

Just came out of Moose Lake (25) area yesterday and the Mayflies were just beginning to hatch. Possibly just a small hatch but lots of tops water activity in the back bays of Moose especially when we came out of the portage from Wind lake. The mosquitoes were PLENTY thick back there as well. Also, if there are any A+ blood donors around, give me a shout...
Give me a call on CH16 and I'll get out of your way.

Wallidave: "Had a mayfly hatch on Saganagons over the last couple weeks. Nothing major but the few walleye I cleaned were full of the nymphs."
We saw a few on our trip too, but nothing major. Didn't cause any problems with the fishing.
