Impressed by QueticoMike's great smallmouth pix, got me to wondering. I'm paranoid about dropping a camera in the drink, and I'm a weight wienie. So what camera to take along?

A waterproof Olympus for the canoe and a Sony digital SLR for ashore.

I’m trying to decide between taking one or two.

I have a GoPro knockoff (I think it’s called a campak, $40 or so on amazon). I’ll be takin that, along with extra batteries and chargers, and memory cards. I made a canoe mount for it too, so I should get some video.

Then I’m struggling if I want a good one. My “good” digital—a Canon Eos mirrorless—is probably worth about $300 used, $700 new 5-10 years ago. I have a waterproof and shockproof case, so the idea would be to only take it out on fishing days (meaning leave it stashed on travel days), only because it really does make a difference having a good lens. Not worried about the weight, just the redundancy and potential of damage.

I think I’m going to bring it, because why else do I have it if not to take pictures of cool things and places and people I love?

I take a waterproof P & S which I attach to a lanyard and wear around my neck since it doesn't float. It fits in my shirt pocket when not in use.

Just my phone and I keep it in a small dry bag.

I usually use my phone for most pictures, although I also often have a GoPro along that is doing a time lapse of our travels. One of my kids has a shock/water proof digital camera which also gets use.

The Olympus is an excellent choice. I have a TG-810, which is waterproof, and can go down to a depth of 30 feet. It takes pretty good pics and video, and fits in the palm of my hand. I use it snorkeling, and on the boat when I am fishing.

Nikon Coolpix AW110. Waterproof. Takes good pictures and OK video. Orange. Light. Spare battery is small and light.

GoPro for my water shots and video, cell phone for all others. I can get 5 days out of both before recharging using a GoalZero solar panel.

I'm in the same boat of thought. What's the use of a camera if you leave it home? I'm bringing my canon 70D with a kit lens and my 70-200mm f4 is lens. Just keep it in a dry bag until needed. Great for catching loons and other wildlife.

GoPro Hero 5 black. It is tough always out. I shoot photos in raw format then edit them later. Has a wide angle so easy to take photos in a canoe and get good shots can always edit later. Voice activated if you need hands off or shoot group photo. Waterproof, small, lightweight, also shoots good video. I attached a strap that floats—kids love to use it when they are jumping into the lake to take videos. So it is entertaining too.

The only thing I don’t recommend it for is if you shoot a lot of wildlife at long range then you want a good camera with actual zoom, not digital zoom. That was about 1% of my shots YMMV, but I left the heavier camera at home.

I use my iPhone and bring two bridge cameras, A Lumix FZ70 for long distance and a Lumix FZ 1000 for shorter distances and more details. I take over 1000 pictures on every trip though.
