Hi everyone! I am looking for a very specific canoe plan. I have found one close to what I want but I am hoping for a better option. I am looking for a Strip canoe plan for a "long nose ojibwa", kootenay or mic mac style. If you have watched Larry R.'s (Nibimoc's) video's he has a solo version of this that is beautiful. I am looking for a tandem that can also be used to solo in the 17 to 17.5 foot length. The closest I can find is the Bear Mountain Redbird 176. If I remember correctly Jim Dodd built the one Nibimoc's uses. I think that is a variation of the Bear Mountains. I am just guessing from the little research I did and an email reply from Larry that I think I remember him saying it was Jim that built it. I hope I have this all straight. Anyway, does anyone know of any plans for a similar style in this profile of canoe? I have read that the Kootenay is an update of the Mic mac designed by David Hanzen which was inspired by the Long Nosed Ojibwa rice harvesting canoes. Any input or information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

I believe that Jim is repairing Larry's canoe. I believe David Morlock built it.

The Minnesota Canoe Association has plans for a 17' Kootney that might interest you.

Thank you, I was fighting a cold this weekend so I wasn't online at all. I pulled up the web page for the Minnesota Canoe Association. Thank you for the tip.

David Hazen's book - A Stripper's Guide to Canoe Building has several plans that would fit your requirements. Plus he has some good building hints that I hadn't found elsewhere. The plans are full scale.

I have looked at purchasing that book because there is a plan in that set I am interested in. However, in reading the reviews it sounds like many of the "new" books ship out without the plans in them. Sounds like the plans are just slipped in between the book and the dust cover. I am thinking about just rolling the dice and getting one and hoping they come with the book.

I am the happy owner of a 17' Mic Mac that was built from David Hazen's plans found in his book. From what I've gathered the plans were based on the MCA guide model canoe. I built it using the Kootenay stems that you mentioned. I found the plans had a couple of glitches but nothing that can't be worked around. The forms for starters are spaced roughly 2' apart which is quite a spread by todays standards. I built it without staples so I think that was more forgiving for the boat to fair out. The stem forms needed to be raised 1/2" so they would fair with the rest of the forms and there is a small section on the bottom of the bow kootenay stem form that was left out on the drawing. Seems like that would be hard to overlook but the drawings are overlayed with two stem shapes and three length choices for the boat. so it does look a little confusing, at least it did to me.

Awesome!! I would love to see a photo if you want to show it off. I have watched enough of the video's from Larry (Nibimocs) and I love the shape of the Mic Mac \ Kootenay strip. Did you have any problems area's that you needed to get creative with since the forms are 2' apart and you didn't use staples. I am not planning on using any but if I get into a spot I can't find a good way to hold it I am not opposed to using a couple. Did you use Western Red Cedar? I am toying with using White Ash with some detailing in Hickory. I am a little nervous about going away from cedar though.

This is probably a better topic for the builders forum. I'll post a pic there, hopefully you can get more info from other builders on that forum. The kootenay style stems put a smile on my face whenever I look at them.

I didn't realize there was a builders forum. I have found a couple old threads from 2011 and 2014 on this message board and I saw your name a couple times. :) I have been getting a lot of info from a different board through web searches too. It is nice to run into the same names on a couple different areas. Makes me feel better. I want to do a stemless 18' tandem if I can get the details worked out. I will find the builders forum on here. thank you!
