Easy to make and saves cook time and fuel.

I do though have a pile of MSR screens from old stoves that just seem to last forever (still using the first one purchased with a stove 25 years ago. And the stouter folding screens from Amazon start around $8 may save some bleeding.

That was my first thought: costs less to buy a wind screen than the foil pan.

Whatever folks. Rack Liners

Thinking I'll make 4 or 5 to give away. Cost about $0.60 apiece. Its OK. I have kevlar gloves and industrial grade scissors. To each their own, eh? :-)

While I pointed out benefits of ready made, home made can be specific for the application. I have made many. And they are very useful !

I make fishing rod holders out of pvc sink drain pipe and pipe clamps, im sure id get teased alittle as well, but, rod holders you can buy seem heavy and not $2 like mine. I bought a $10 windscreen, its heavy but huge, it may go back to Amazon.

Andy, still using the Whisperlight Universal??
One of my peeves with the MSR screen is it's height, too high to use a frypan that has a handle. Now have a pair of 5 inch high screens for use with similar burners.

Brian, if you bought the folding screen I have mentioned in other posts, HIGHROCK thru Amazon has 2 heights. One tall over 9 inches, one short, about 5 inches. HIGHROCK Lightweight Compact Folding Camp Stove Windscreen

Yes I am Ken. Even with the handle slot in the MSR model, its still too high for a fry pan handle. I'll figure out a design and make one to solve the glitch.

Ken, i did buy the tall one, its nice, but i might swap it for the short one, thank you. I also purchased a Terra hiker 3500W stove as a backup for my windpro 2, i am impressed with the design. The stand is awesome, the base is very stable (i think better then my MSR) and can hold my heavy kitchen pots. As for how it performs i dont know yet, but for $18 i think its a steal as a backup and maybe primary. I could see it being great for groups due to the base stability and stand size.

I've made a couple from heavy foil pans, and the big foil pans are generally a couple for a buck at the local Dollar Tree. Making your own lets you accommodate any stove/pan combination, something the factory windscreen may not do. No cuts to my skin during fabrication, and no damage to scissors. ButtHead's right, though--the old MSR windscreens seem to last forever!

Is there much benefit to have a screen high enough to enclose your pots as well? Do most just enclose the stove only?

just my opinion.
if i am building a windscreen. i want at least the bottom half of my pot covered. you start messing with alcohol stoves. trying to maximize heat savings.

High as you can get away with. Depends on pot or pans and if access is difficult as with my comment to Andy. Just make sure it does not choke the burner. I will use a MSR heat exchanger with a screen when it's cold. 2 concepts to consider, a windscreen to keep wind/breeze of the burner, a wraparound to contain/concentrate heat to the pot. And of course combinations of both.
Just be carefull with canister top burners, you do not want to overheat the canister. Friend made this for his Pocket Rocket.
