We plan to spend a couple of nights on Frost in mid-July. Do you have any day trip ideas with decent fishing from Frost? Thank you!

Day trip the Frost River. Water levels are always the question here, but, Octopus would be rather easy I think. With enough water you could easily go to Chase or Pencil Lakes. Just remember that you have to go back up over those beaver dams that you down on the way out.

You don't mention from which direction you are arriving at Frost Lake. If you come from the north (Long Island Lake), head out onto Cherokee and down to Cherokee Creek. If you come from the south (Cherokee and Gordon), head up to Long Island Lake. If you head to the east end, you should have time to get up on Muskeg Creek and Muskeg Lake.

Down the Frost River way you could go to Bologna Lake. No idea about fish, but it's got a campsite I think is visited by moose more than people. I thought it was a beautiful lake. The portage to it is uphill, and the lake seems high up - there's no high ground in the distance. It looks like water flows out in three directions so it must be Spring fed.

If you are feeling adventurous you could head north from Octopus. The BWCA.com map shows there maybe an old dump site with relics from the old days, and you could see how far north you can get - maybe even get to Mass Lake. Or see if it's possible to go up the creek from Frost? I was eyeing those lakes to the north, but did not try.

Personally, I'd just troll something deep around the islands in Frost for Lakers and kick back and relax on one of the beaches. I don't think Long Island nor Cherokee are decent enough fishing lakes to bother day tripping to, especially in July. If you just want to peek around, fine, but not if you really want good fishing. You'll find a few northerns here and there.....

For fishing I'd stay on Frost and then go to Gordon for some variety. Cherokee is a tough place to fish. If feeling really adventurous, you could day trip to the Temperance lakes. You'd get the benefit of seeing Cherokee on your way.

For Frost, there's a big rock in the north central part of the lake. We've caught several nice size pike there. Also plenty of lake trout on the east side of the lake. You'll need to troll deep in July. Once you find them, you can then drop spoons (I like the Little Cleos).
