Just a quick question: What fish species are in Kekekabic? The DNR reports list lake trout and white sucker and Furtman's book lists lake trout and, I believe perch. Are there no walleyes, northerns and smallmouth or are they just a given?

You can see the most recent survey here: https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/lakefind/showreport.html?downum=38022600

That reported a Smallmouth Bass and nets under-represent bass so it is probably safe to say there are SM Bass in there.

As for Pike, I wouldn't be surprised if there is a small population in there but likely they are rare if they don't turn up in the surveys.

And Walleye, I see nothing stating that they've ever been stocked in that lake so it would be a good bet that there are none.

Thank you, I had not seen that most recent DNR survey. Rock bass and smallmouth sampled for the first time--interesting. I can't imagine that there are not northerns in there too, they seem to be everywhere!

I caught this in Kek just off the island site. Was casting a silver spoon for lakers near a 10 foot deep Boulder pile as I have done before. Was very surprised.

Wow--very cool! The only time we camped on Kekekabic we were in transit and I didn't spend any serious effort fishing but it's great to see there are more species than lake trout and forage fish!

This might surprise you, but they don't win every inter-species tussle. I fished a lake in Ontario once. The Canadian government had done a species survey and only found smallmouth.

I asked my paddling partner if he was marking fish and he said, "Yeah."

"What depth?"

"Everywhere."

And they were everywhere, but they were all pike.

True, probably just getting their foot in the door on Kek. Interesting on the rock bass, which also have been increasing in lakes in the BWCA
