Sorry, I got nothin.' Fished Mayhew for lake trout last week; marked fish at around 30', so maybe taildancers on Gunflint would turn a trout or two. Kevin?

Didn't I read once that you worked at the Gunflint Lodge. Couldn't you just inquire of Adam Treeful, or one of the other guides about fishing Gunflint Lake. One of them told me that the shoreline is just like a bathtub and very difficult to fish. Better yet, hire them to take you out. I like your posts. You have a unique perspective having lived in the area.

ya, i did, for 30 years, most all at the outfitters. anyway, retired from there fall 2016 to move south. amazing what the mind forgets in a short amount of time.
apparently adam in vacationing in alaska right now, and my other go-to guides are all booked up. they both said it's been very hot up there which usually means the fish bite slows... or maybe that's an excuse for not catching?
anyway, we'll have fun fishing and/or catching.

Hope it goes well for you Mocha! I have no real advice to offer as we totally struck out on Gunflint in mid-June. I can say that water levels were up enough that i never had to totally tilt my motor up through gunflint narrows. 2-3 feet was my lowest reading in the rocky channel. The guy that sold me bait at GFL had mentioned that some people were catching lake trout while targeting walleye, trolling the points on the US shoreline starting just east of the lodge.

Back in the 1960's, I was wandering the Gunflint Trail and stopped at the Gunflint Lodge. Janet Hansen was operating the outfitters and she offered me a job, but she had a whip on her office wall so I declined and ended up going back home. I kind of regret that with all the history that has been made.

My grandson, Jacob, worked at Sea Gull Outfitters in 2015 or 16. He talked about the comraderrie with the summer help from the other camps. Jake and I vacationed at Gunflint several years. We fished with Adam, Jon and Cory, with a lot of fishing success.

Try slow trolling the shorelines with a slip sinker, spinner rig and small hook with live bait. Of course, the main factor is knowing where to fish. The lakers will be in 40 feet of water or so at around this time. Try my member sight. There is a very good jigging lure displayed there.

Good Luck. Wish I was making a trip again this year.

Ok Mocha,
I have a tip I can share with you for that specific area.....In fact, as I recall, you were good enough to share it with us several years ago.....It was 2015 maybe? We had brought our troop up and were taking them on the Granite River. Our Scoutmaster was pestering you about some of your "secret" tips/spots on that route......You finally gave in and unrolled a map and began tracing the route with your finger.....my buddy put on his reading glasses and leaned over the counter ready to absorb all of your wisdom.....You then said. "Fish in the blue areas on the map".....I just about spit my coffee out on the floor! That was pretty funny...…You had him "hook, line, and sinker!" So remember your own advice!

Mike
