Wanna know why I go solo?

From Calvin Rutstrum in "Paradise Below Zero," quoting some unnamed backwoods traveler who turns to his companion and cheerily proclaims on their penetration of the Canadian wilderness:

"Now, dammit, we can yell for help and no one will hear us."

Take the "us" part out and I'm a happy camper. ;-)

It is pretty special when you find yourself in the middle of a lake, surface like glass, the only ripples are from your paddle, and you haven' t seen another person for days. To know you are the only person for miles in any direction.

A boat is safe in its harbor but that's not what boats are for.
