Are you looking for the cheapest batteries, or the lightest batteries, or rechargeable batteries? Do you leave your detector and batteries in the canoe when portaging or pack it?

Not really looking for the cheapest option and we usually carry the finder across the portages separate from the canoe so lightweight is best.

For light weight non rechargeable I would suggest 8 Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA batteries. Don’t be tempted to use 8 Alkaline you will be disappointed. Best price for Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries is on line. For a holder that is not mounted in the canoe I don’t think you can beat the ease and price of the readymade battery holders.
I like to put a rubber band around them after the batteries are installed. This type of holder will need to be kept dry. There are lots of little boxes from kitchen snap ware to Pelican boxes to do this job. I like a 2 liter Sea to Summit Dry Sack hanging from a thwart.

I use a AA battery pack made for home security systems. Very tidy. If you have a black and white unit 8 alkaline AA will last for a trip if you don't leave it on the entire time.
You can see it if you squint at the picture. I sure like my clamp mount idea.

Lundojam where do you get these powerpacks?

I use a Garmin Striker 4 and recently with someones advice from here, I bought 4 18650 batteries from Wholesale Li-ion. Protected LG MJ1 3500mAh 10A 18650 Button Top Battery

My Garmin can take over 16 volt so I bought a 4 battery holder. 4 days of moderate fishing and came home still with 14 volts left.

One of the best systems and it is rechargeable. What do you use for a battery holder? What do you use for a charger?

Will the Garmin transducer shoot thru the hull ?

Here is the battery holder 4 x 18650 14.8V and the charger 18650 Battery Charger,MiBOXER 4.

The Garmin easily shoots through the kevlar hull.

After finding out the batteries lasted so long with the Striker 4, I was mad I didn't buy the Striker 4 cv model. I was just worried being it draws over double the power of the lower model.

Here is the battery case I use. It's a waterproof case from Walmart for under $10. I drilled a small hole in the side for the cable and use a 9v battery connector to attach the 10 AA or 4 18650 holder.

Yes, shoots through the hull of my Souris River perfectly. I use a piece of closed cell foam with a hole cut in it to keep it in place, then just dribble a hand full of water over it.

With the protected 18650 being a little longer than the unprotected 18650 I have heard they are a tight fit in that type of holder. Do you have any trouble installing batteries?

"
They are a very tight fit. Installing batteries is easier than removing them. Had to use a screwdriver to slightly pry it loose.
