Just received my new issue of Paddling Magazine from across the border. Page 15 lists some favorite paddling locations and the State or Provence they are located in. Bottom right corner of the page caught me off guard.

Wait a minute... Now I'm confused more. The main difference between Chief and Cheif is that the Chief is a a leader or ruler of a people or clan and Cheif has no English definition. It has generally been misspelled.

No intention to leave anyone hanging. I assume everyone is a magazine addict as I am. It listed the person's favorite spot as the BWCA in Wisconsin. Hopefully someone who knows how to post images will put one up. That someone is not me. Simply lack of knowledge on my part.

No need for confusion, it’s misspelled. You get a gold star for noticing!

Oh , I thought you actually knew the location they were referring to. I do know of a chain of lakes with camp sites that are connected by portages up in the Northern Highlands American Legion State Forrest. It’s been on my radar for years. But haven’t got up there yet. I’m sure it’s decent, but no way it will offer the solitude and fishing the BWCA can offer. So instead of going there I would rather drive an extra 4 hours as go to the real deal.

Thanks for providing the link, Cheif. I've wintercamped at Bittersweet Lakes and think it would be a nice remote canoe spot with low usage.

White Sand Lake, Near Boulder Junction, WI, was the former site of the Region 7 Northern Wisconsin National Canoe Base. It was a Boy Scout camp from 1940 - 1983 and was known as MIWI (Michigan-Illinois-Wisconsin-Indiana(or Iowa?) until 1943 where they called it Region 7. I bought a Region 7 belt buckle from a guy off of craigslist in Menominee who was selling a bunch of his dad's old scout memorabilia from Region 7 (patches, t-shirts, etc.). He told me a bit of the history and a quick google search opened up quite a bit more history to it. I have plans to make it out there sometime for sure!
Give me a call on CH16 and I'll get out of your way.

There's several canoe camping options in WI/UP of MI that can resemble a BWCA trip. Turtle-Flambeau Flowage is a good one and is free, but you have to deal with motorboat noise/drivebys. Sylvania Wilderness is basically a mini-BWCA with almost Quetico-like fishing rules and reservable campsites.

We've been to both, and enjoyed them both. They are not the bwca, but good alternatives that are closer, so are easier to squeeze a quick trip in to.

Wow!"
I mean WI has a NBA and NFL championship at least :D
