We have not been up the Stuart River in a number of years. We are finally going again in August and I remember that the last portage into Stuart Lake had a “short-cut”.

Could someone refresh my memory as to where it is? Also, if anyone has been up the Stuart lately, let us know how the mud is at the end of the long first portage.

The last portage is marked with a Cairn on a sloping rock, but if you paddle past it and continue to where the river bends to the right another 100 yards or so upstream, you will find a takeout on a sloping rock just before the rapids. This cuts the portage almost in half.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, I thought I remembered following the river beyond the portage but it has been too many years. It has been at least 11 years since we last went this route. I turn 64 next week and this trip will be just my wife and myself. Last time we went with our son and daughter when they were in college.

Hopefully you have a great trip. That EP is one of my favorites as I’ve done it several times now. Good luck!

Great EP as you know since you have already been.

Regarding the mud, if there is high water or you have had good rains prior to going in, there is an option for early put-in (see picture below). When we went in June 2018, it had rained for several days so the water at the portage crossing where I show the early-put in was waist high and you could easily put in and get on the river. I have seen pictures from others where this is almost dry so it depends on the water levels.

Have a great trip!!
