It was so big I was afraid it'd turn around and swat me!

Nope. Their larvae help process dead spruce, etc., back into mulch. Part of the cycle.
Their family (of beetles) known as longhorn beetles, because of the long antennae.

They lay their eggs in your hair and you eventually go crazy.

I think you are talking about those talk-radio earbugsā€¦.

Just hope it does not have a giant bug zapper to use against you.

Known around Ely as Jackpine Beetle.
They take their time, but will bite, and it's painful.

Yes, I always thought they were called "pine bark beetles."

when it gets quiet at night, you can hear their larvae "sawing" wood as they burrow under bark of dead or down trees. We were up on the Knife the year after the blowdown and with all the down trees around camp, it was almost deafening.

The Asian long horn beetle is a real problem around the Chicago area. Invasive and killes several species of trees.

Had one of those beasties on my tarp last trip. It's giant head head turned to follow me each time I walked past - it was supper creepy.
