when it gets quiet at night, you can hear their larvae "sawing" wood as they burrow under bark of dead or down trees. We were up on the Knife the year after the blowdown and with all the down trees around camp, it was almost deafening.

rtallent: "Nope. Their larvae help process dead spruce, etc., back into mulch. Part of the cycle.
Their family (of beetles) known as longhorn beetles, because of the long antennae."
The Asian long horn beetle is a real problem around the Chicago area. Invasive and killes several species of trees.
