Twistertail - any must sees on the drive through the UP?
I'm also in Ohio, Cleveland area, and we always drive up through Chicago. Going through the UP adds about 90 minutes to our drive, according to google maps, but it may be less than that with the inevitable delays through Chicago.
Thought about driving through the UP but haven't done it yet. Any highlights or must-stop places?

I live in north central WV and I've been going through the UP for years - ever since I decided to take the scenic route back my second or third trip. I've never gone back by Chicago. I don't think you'll find it adds much, if any, time . . . not counting those scenic stops ;).
I've spent extra time there just to see things. A lot depends on how much time you have to wander a little to see things. You will cross the Mackinac Bridge, which is cool if you've never done it. It's a nice scenic drive as you head west on Rt. 2 after that. You'll head N on Rt. 77 and should stop at Seney NWR for a while. It makes a nice rest break. Heading W from Munising to Marquette is a nice drive along Lake Superior. Agate Falls is a nice stop right along Rt. 28. Shortly W of Ashland is the Whittlesey Creek NWR for a quick rest stop.
There are many great places to see that aren't right on your route - Porcupine Mountains, Apostle Islands, Pictured Rocks, Copper Falls, Tahquamenon Falls, Black River Scenic Byway.

Not to totally hijack the thread. . .but the scenic drive in Canada across the northern shore of Lake Superior is also beautiful. We have to go through Chicago now because we are picking up our granddaughter in Wilmette, but if we didn't, that is how I would go. Even if it takes a bit longer, it is so lovely and there are so many waterfalls and other nice things along the route. I miss going that way. We always made a stop at the Soo and watched a freighter or two in the locks, too.

All I can add is that it was a beautiful drive across the UP with absolutely no traffic. According to google maps it adds 2 hours to my trip but there are so many variables with traffic and how much you pay attention to the "suggested speed limit" who really knows. I will say the last half hour or so before we got to St Ignace was not a fun drive, it was dark and foggy with lots of deer close to the road.

She had to have a party the weekend we got home to get re-acquainted with her friends, lol. I was recruiting kids for a trip next year, got some interested at least.

Nice report. It's always good to spend time with teens away from the interruptions we all have in our lives. We took our son and his friend one year. They had a great time. They all got too busy with college and girlfriends after that. We're still working on getting them to start camping again.

I am local in Chicago and the traffic has been horrific on weekdays virtually all day long. The northwest Indiana area on 80/94 is a nightmare on most days. Unless you are passing through on a weekend and you have the time I woukd go any way but through Chicago.
