Some of my favorite fish photos are the ones taken before the lure is unhooked, especially when the fish has just gobbled that thing HARD. You know sometimes they barely nip that rear treble, and other times they really commit. Let's see your favorites! Here's one from last night. Nothing too special about the fish, just a pretty typical Mississippi River pike, but he was dang sure he wanted to eat that jointed rapala :)

Rarely use leader on the river. When I do it's only because it's still tied on from a trip to a clearer body of water and I don't notice an uptick in fish caught. Down on pool 4 in the dead of winter when the clarity is good I'll tie one on. Otherwise I tie 20 pound braid in bright colors direct to a snap. Fewer points of potential failure and it's OBVIOUS any time my crank picks up debris. We caught 4 species on that setup last night.

When I do use a leader it's typically 8lb flouro unless I'm fishing big laker waters, then it's 14lb.

I wouldn't think any of those line options would give you much protection from a bite off with pike. Do you fish your baits pretty fast?

I'm not really targeting pike so I don't worry about it. But FWIW I have actually never been bitten off in 5 years of fishing a similar set up. Although I may have came pretty close last night, he's right near the snap I guess. We're mainly after walleye/sauger and last night we had 7 of the "right kind," 1 channel cat, and 1 pike.

To answer your question -- we typically troll downstream. GPS speed is reading 3.5 - 4.5mph which is maybe .75 - 1.5 above the speed of the current itself. I honestly don't know if that's considered pretty fast or not?

This one took the Rapala Scatter Rap very deep. That lure is about 6" long. You can see blood coming out between the pectoral fins. Had a heck of a time getting all the hooks out while it was flopping around. I was targeting pike that day and was using Knot2kinky nickel-titanium wire tied directly to the lure for a leader.

Two of the largemouth I've caught around the Twin Cities... jig was a 3/8oz football with a craw/bug-style trailer. Frog was obviously a frog with a white belly. Straight up choked...

This is what remains of a Rapala Original Floating Minnow, courtesy of a 38” pike. The fish was released and he swam off with the last treble hook.

Seems like a fun thread and i'm surprised at the small number of replies so i figured id pitch in. Both fish caught around the Saturday bay area this June.

Caught on a VERY sunny afternoon.

Not sure if jig/leech qualifies as a "lure" but I like the picture anyways.

I thought this was kinda cool...
On my most recent trip to the BW while we were setting up camp and I tossed out a leech and bobber . Before I could even set my pole down my bobber went under so I set the hook. I was a brief fight and my line broke. While I was tying on a new hook and getting ready, my nephew tossed out a leech on a jig and spinner. On his first cast he hooks up! After he landed it I was helping get the hook out and noticed my hook was still in it's mouth! I've only had this happen a couple times in my life.

That’s pretty nifty. Dig this “got my lure back!” Story... two summers ago my son and I were on the Mississippi in st Paul like we always are. Trolling a fire tiger reef runner, banging bottom on rocks and breaks it off. Few days later I’m browsing another forum where I post with a bunch of river rats and one of my buds is telling a story... he brought his brother out, who hooked up with a walleye. During the fight something weird happened and there was more dead weight on the line. He had somehow snagged my broken line, which still had the lure on it, as well as a sheepshead! (I used rainbow colored braided line so doubtful it wasn’t my lure.)

Damn i once had a laker spin/twist off the back treble from the split ring on a rapala , they both ended up in the net with the bare treble in it's mouth ,
not a BW pic but adams 21" LMB on the orange spinnerbait.
