My partner and I are looking to enter from the Ely side for the first time. Because of his recent back injury, we're concerned about doing the kind of portaging we have on previous trips. We also won't know until we get there exactly how capable he'll be of portaging, long paddles, etc. So we're looking for a route that could have some good scenery and solitude without much portaging, and preferably using a base camp or two so we won't have to move our gear as often. Planning on a 5-day trip in mid-September.
Right now we're considering the numbered lakes, but are worried we won't get the quiet experience we've had in the past. Any suggestions for good routes or areas to look at?
Take a look at the Slim lake entry. One very easy 98 rod portage from the car and 3 campsites to choose from. Not really a route associated with it but if you want to basecamp and take daytrips it could work. You could check out Hook or Keneu lakes for a day, or behind the southern site there is a network of hiking trails to explore. That could add something different to the trip.
