I'm leaving in 4 weeks. Steve and I along with Mike and his wife plan to meet at Cedar Coffee Company in Two Harbors, Sept. 14th, 11 AM for lunch. Anybody else who is around is welcome to join us.
If anybody is around Grand Marais that evening and wants to meet for dinner let me know. My Sisters Place would be good.
I'll be back in Grand Marais on the 21st if anyone is around to meet for dinner.
The 22nd, Curt and I'll be in Ely at the Boathouse.
Will be in Ely on Oct. 1st also.
Hope to see some more of you while I'm up there.

Not looking good for me this year.
I'm leaving shortly for Montana/Idaho to go camping and will not be back until Sept 20th at the earliest.

May the rivers be crooked and winding, and your portages lonesome, leading to the most amazing view.

inspector13: "I might mosey along up to Grand Marais too as long as I leave by 6:30. I just don’t like driving very long in the dark anymore."
Let's plan to eat dinner around 5:00 . . . ? It may be busy - I think that's the unplugged festival weekend.

Sorry we'll probably miss you, but have fun out west, Linden. I'm driving out to OR afterwards to babysit grandkids.

cowdoc: "Driving up from the TC early morning of 21st. Hope to be going through GM about 9-10am on our way to Rockwood to grab permit and dump in. Just gonna miss ya."
Yeah, I doubt I'll have exited and got back to town by then. But keep an eye out for a red Subaru Outback with WV license.

Sounds good to me.

It looks good for me to meet you for lunch on the 14th at the Cedar Coffee Co in TH. As it now stands, I will be meeting paddling friends on the 13th for dinner and a bit of campfire conversation in Brule while they camp and paddle on the Bois Brule River for a few days. If the group decides on dinner out on the 14th instead of Friday the 13th, I may not be able to do lunch with you in Two Harbors that same day.
08/18/2019 08:34AM
Bummer! I'll be in GM the weekend of the 13 - 15, then back in the area for a final paddle around the 27th. The weekend of the 20th is Decorah.
I'm sorry you'll miss the chance to meet Blueberry, the Northstar Trillium. I hope you all have a wonderful trip! One day, I hope we can meet!

We'll be in GM on the 14th. Steve and I will plan to eat around 5:00 or so. Let us know if you can make it; otherwise have a good time! If you see a red Subaru Outback with WV license plates . . . I suspect I'll be the only one that matches that description.
08/18/2019 11:13AM
I misunderstood! I thought it was Two Harbors only on the 14th. But remember, I'm the type who can't even get the permit entry date correct.
Ok, let me check with Kathy about our plans, and I'll see if we can't at least say hi, even if you don't get to paddle Blueberry. But, we should try. You really need to try it out, after all the helpful advice you gave me! We will either be the dark blue Grand Cherokee or the green VW Alltrack wagon, with WI plates and canoe on top.

No, no, I never forget anything Mike and you can ask my wife. She's always saying, "you never said that" or telling the grandkids, "he never did that". So my memory is so good, I not only remember everything I said or did, but things I never said or did! I even remember things my wife never said . . . It's so confusing. ;)
We'll probably plan to eat around 5:00 at My Sister's Place.

boonie: "pswith5: "Still hoping to see you on a campsite on Monday or Tuesday. But, the kids aren't leaving enough time on the front end to grab lunch."
Pete, will keep an eye out for you. Mike and I will be two solos; what about you? "
Not 100 percent sure, but I think I will be in an older model bright yellow Wenonah and a off-white solo-plus. The plan is three of my kids and me pushing off mid-morning on the 15th out of EP 50. Never been through this EP so not sure how long it will take to get to Cherokee with a couple newbs.
Without the bad times, the good times wouldn't seem so good.

Pete-
I've been in Cross Bay several times although not always that direction. I think it's a pretty cool entry. Here's a navigation tip to get started right - when you leave the EP landing, you need to make a 180-degree to the right, then one to the left, and head for the jumble of rocks there.
You'll probably want to take a couple of days to do it, although I'm sure it could be done in day. It's probably about 12 miles (double) to Cherokee + whatever to find a site. There are a lot of short portages though (~10) and a couple of beaver dams. If you stop in the Long Island area, 2nd day would be short with time for a side trip to Frost Lake if you're not planning it on the return.

nctry: "I have to recheck my schedule... I want to see the challenge people off... I may do some camping along the way too. My daughter is leaving before that to go back to Washington so I’m I’ll be kinda ready to go bummin for a bit."
I hope you can make it, Ben. Maybe it'll end up on your route to something else (or no more than a hundred miles off route). I'm still planning to be there. Lots of shifting in my schedule recently but the DB Memorial Paddle gathering is still on track for the 13th for dinner with them and lunch in TH on 14th. Just had a lunch planned for over a month needing to be rescheduled because a friend fall and broke bones in both arms and ended up in rehab. Don't know when we'll be able to reschedule it for.
I think it would be great to have a "Wing Night" somewhere in Duluth or area before fall moves too far along. For those who can't get together with Boonie or just want to. Like the one set up by LindenTree last year (or was that two years ago?). I'm not the best to set one up but willing to help w/ logistics--and attend.

boonie: "Anybody else going to be around any of those times? "
I am a little bummed, I am just going to miss the fun. My daughter and I will be going in on the 19th out of Ely and back out on the 22nd. Just a quick trip we snuck in at the last minute. We are driving through the night on the 18th and going right in and then same thing when we come out on Sunday, driving straight back so we can be at work on Monday morning. It would have been fun to meet a few folks from the message board.

I thought/hoped one of these years I'd get to meet you. But as soon as the girls are done with their crazy soccer schedules and go off to college we'll be starting all over again with baby Bruin. Well, he'll only be 5 when that happens and a few years away from crazy travel sports schedules yet if he ends up playing something so maybe there will be a window where not only can I meet you at one of these gatherings I can even join you for a trip or part of a trip.
Have Fun!!!

djwillco: "Shoot! Will miss you by one day. We're paddling out from Little Sag on the 15th, exit at Round Lake. Any chance you're paddling in that way? Maybe we'd see you on the lakes!"
Sorry we'll miss you. Mike and I are entering at Baker. Enjoy your trip!

jillpine: "We will be there (My Sisters, 5pm, Sept 14)!
Mike, I'm looking forward to hearing what you decided to do regarding wet-foot gear!
See all of you soon -
Beth"
Yeah me too. I'm hoping it's my Chota boots and Hippies, but I have my Irish Setters(muck type) ready too for dry footing. I wish I could take both but my Setters probably weigh 7 lbs and are no where near packable. Won't know for sure until I hear the last forecast. Hoping for better weather this fall trip. Typically Chota's are perfect for early fall so my bets on them.

Hey there, Steve. Sorry to say I won't be able to make it to Two Harbors or Grand Marais since I need to be in The Twin Cities that weekend. However, I may be able to make it to The Boathouse on the 22nd. My husband and I bought a cabin home 50 miles north of Two Harbors last fall. We're off Hwy 1 near the old Happy Wanderer bar about 20 miles southeast of Ely. Let me know your plans as it gets closer. Looking forward to it! ~ Karen

I will be glad to help out with that idea, Ginny! There will not be a TC wingnight this year but I may be camping that last week of September somewhere!

boonie: "I was getting ready to email you to see if you'd be able to make any of them, Karen, since I didn't remember any recent posts. Hope you make it! "
Lol. Yes, I have been nothing but a lurker lately! Haha I've been MIA from this site too long. I'm starting to check in more often again!

boonie: "x2jmorris: "I am off work for once but I'll be in Ely unfortunately. Hopefully next time though."
When will you be in Ely? We'll be there the 22nd and Oct 1st . . . "
Sept 12th - 15th. Father in law is renting a cabin somewhere up there so a nice relaxing time.

"
It will be nice to meet you, Michwall - looking forward to it. Mike and I enter Sunday at Baker. Mike may want to pick your brain about options for his lengthy solo.

Thanks Boonie. We are looking forward to meeting all of you as well. I had been a little concerned about the weather forecast for the week we are planning for tripping, But, I am more encouraged by the changes this morning. See you Saturday.

If lurkers are allowed, I'll be coming up on the 14th and can make the Grand Marais 5pm meetup for sure, and possibly Two Harbors if I get going early enough.
The dog and I are going to do some hiking and camping for a week, and would like to meet some new people. I attended one of the meetups a couple years ago and had a good time.

Come on down! We'd love to have you. That's the purpose - meeting people. I actually don't know most of the people who are coming other than online.
I'm hitting the road tomorrow morning. See you all soon. Don't forget your sign with your name on it - hold it high!

Hey Boonie, sorry I didn't make it into cherokee to see ya. That looming all day rain o. Tuesday kept us old up on long island. How about all that thunder?? My kids thought that was a little scary but entertaining.
