I'm curious if anyone else ever takes a frisbee with them to the BDub? I've always taken one - some campsites are better than others for tossing it around, but the tighter (less open) campsites are often more challenging (and fun) for figuring out how to toss it around (bending it around trees, etc). And, of course, there's the inevitable task of fishing it out of the lake with the fish net, or even having to get in the canoe, to retrieve a wayward disc. On one of my more recent trips we had a lighted disc (with a light inside so it was illuminated) which allowed for tossing it around after dark. We wondered if folks on other campsites on the lake were wondering what the green orb was that was floating back and forth on the distant shoreline in the dark.

Having played soccer until the age of 53, I actually used to bring a medium sized (size 3) soccer ball. I'd deflate it, stuff it in a pack with a small pump, and pump it up when we got to camp and we'd figure out ways to kick it around.

Everyone has their own ways of killing time while relaxing in camp. This was a preferred method for me and my tripping partners, and I have fond memories of trips with friends tossing frisbees and kicking around soccer balls in the wilderness.

Maybe this is why I've never done a solo trip...

I bring a frisbee on every trip- but as a solo traveler it is used more as a cutting board (with guardrails), dish rack and a bellows for recalcitrant fires. Instead of a soccer ball consider a hacky sack- yeah in my late fifties it seems ridiculous but on the other hand no one's looking.

I was never any good with hacky sacks. Plus they're harder to kick across distances. Depending on the campsite, finding a way to kick around a soccer ball often leads to the site becoming a bit of a putt-putt course!

I've never taken one, but I know some who've used them as plates. I wonder if a boomerang would work for solo ;).

I read someone using them to keep tortillas in the food pack. I like the fire-breather idea.

Never before but now that I take my young boys 9 and 12 we take a frisbee. Fun to throw out and jump off ledges to catch.

On my son’s first couple trips I brought a frisbee, wiffle bat and ball, a putter and golf balls. The golf idea never really caught on, the greens were a tad rough, but I think him and the other two kids spent 90% of their time in camp hitting rocks into the lake with the bat. Something like if you hit it to the island it was a home run. Hey, anything but video games, they were actually making up games to play like we did ‘back in the day’. Frisbees do come in handy, a multi purpose thing.u

I haven't taken one but I have seen many up there. Some are the flexible cloth ones. I've seen people with them in the water either swimming or between canoes. And, of course, frisbee and dogs.

Way back in the day (mid '80's) my brother, dad, and I did a trip down the St. Croix River. We brought a hand sized mini football to toss around. While camping on a sand bar we ended up playing home run derby with the football, using our canoe paddles as bats.

When we returned home my brother had trouble swinging a regular sized bat the rest of the baseball season. He also hit a few home runs too!

Hello lakerloon, I think I took a frisbee a couple times in the early days. Don't remember throwing it much. Like you said sites can be small at times. Who did you play soccer with?? I am 8 days younger than you and played a little myself. My father was very involved in Minnesota soccer community. Most soccer guys knew him. License plate was SOCCER. Might be fun to get together and have a beer and talk about our passions. Pete

Yes, but a good, quality disc. 175g Discraft Ultrastar. Great as a plate, cutting board, sink...and of course good for catch and other games.

Hey Pete, I remember seeing that license plate! I played primarily in the MRSL (and served on the MRSL Board for a time) as well as playing in lots of indoor leagues, co-ed teams, and the +40 and +50 leagues up at NSC in my later years - I was a goalkeeper. I know lots of folks in the soccer community, both players and former Thunder/current Loons supporters. Soccer was a BIG part of my life for many years.

The BWCA is probably one of the few places that I don't bring a frisbee. I play ultimate frisbee and have for the last 20 years or so. A frisbee is standard gear to have in my car at all times. If I were to go to the BWCA with friends that also play ultimate frisbee I may be tempted to bring a disc along.

Over the years I've used a frisbee for a lot of different things. On college tournament trips they often got used as cereal bowls in the morning, plates in the evening, and beer mugs at night (they hold way more beer than you'd think).

And like sns mentioned it has to be a 175 gram discraft disc.

Discraft 175gm will hold a standard pitcher.

Difficult to pour or drink from.

Miss playing ultimate, but the lack of games in northern Minnesota probably saved my knees,

It usually best to leave it on the table and drink hands free until you've worked it down a bit first.

In the Twin Cities there is a pick up game virtually every night of the week as long as there isn't snow on the ground. I also play in a league that has masters leagues, coed leagues, and mens leagues.

A Frisbee isn't a bad idea.. you could do like a mini golf contest.

First, you're giving the game away on the volume of beer held by an Ultrastar. That's always a fun bet to win.

Second...what's this 'knee' of which you speak?

We've usually carried discs (putters, specifically) on trips when we knew we'd be passing through berries. They're also useful for entertainment in camp, fanning the fire, etc.

I like to bring along a DGA Blowfly. It floats, which is nice to have up there.

Not so much in Ely. For a few years I some of the students at VCC ran a bi-weekly pick-up game that I played in. They thought it strange to play with someone older than their parents. I was pleased to discover that despite the hiatus I still had game.

Terrifically sore after the first couple of times. Day to day life requiring very little sprinting and leaping not to mention ground surfing.

nofish I'm wondering if you know Russ Adams? He's an old friend of mine who plays ultimate (Surly team I think) and I've also done several BWCA trips with his brother Scott.

Nights can be very long in the winter, we bring multiple light up frisbees and whiskey.

Fantastic.

Brings back the memories of glo-discs in the wilderness.

As a fun aside, I used to backpack every year with a crew of Ultimate players who would pack in a full badminton set and basecamp with it for a week.

It was a serious affair. With beer.

I don't know him but its possible we've crossed paths on a frisbee field at some point over the years. A quick facebook search shows that him and I have a few mutual friends from the Ultimate world.

I'll still occasionally play against kids that are 20 years younger than me, I'm 38 now. I can't outrun then but can often out play them by adopting the "run smarter not harder" philosophy. As the years start adding up so do the tricks of the trade that we learn along the way.

When I started playing with the VCC kids I was 53. The first time out I was the last one chosen when sides were picked. The next time I was picked first.

Never throw it around at the campsite, but it makes a great plate. Have used them as plates for years.

I bring a frisbee on every trip for the same reasons listed above.

I also bring camping bocce ball set. Probably my favorite activity up there.

Both my sons played on the UW Whitewater Ultimate team. The frisbee always goes along.

When I look across a tranquil lake and see various colored discs flying around, it ruins my wilderness experience and I become deeply offended. I go to the Boundary Waters to escape such things as traffic, electronics, and frisbees.
