This is the third version I have made and tested.
It was used for a ten day 2018 Fall trip in the BWCA for about forty portages, ten days Fall 2019 for 60 portages and it worked very well.
In this version there are the following features:
Non-slip fabric on the outer sides of the right and left pads.
The 1/2” plywood base measures 14-1/2” wide x 8” deep and is varnished.
Each pad is 4” wide.
The 3/8” closed cell foam base extends out 1/2” beyond the front of the base to protect the back of the neck.
Additionally, there is another 3/8” foam pad that is on the middle of the collar and next to the neck.
The main foam is 2” thick extra-firm foam.
The hardware is stainless steel except for the tee-nut.
The outer fabric is coated 420 denier Packcloth on the upper portion and 1000 denier Cordura on the bottom, next to the base.
The top, next to the shoulders, has a lining of coated 1.9 ounce ripstop.
The access zipper is #8 YKK with a no-rattle zipper pull and a zipper flap.
The attachment hardware are 1/4” x 2-1/2” machine screws.
Weight: 1.5 pounds.
