Thank you for the nice trip report and the lessons learned. I wish I was handy with knots but I am not so I bring a printout from Dan's website on knots to remind me on every trip. Nice read.

Nice trip report! Glad to hear you had a great time. Too bad it rained so much though. Few things I noted.

Keen sandals: I bought my pair about 8 years ago and use them a ton on portages (about 3 trips a year)... seems like you had a bad pair. Might be able to contact them and get a free pair. I had a pair of keen work shoes that fell apart right away and Keen gave me 130 dollars to get another pair.

Rocks after that portage: That area is crap. I had the same issue. Had to walk my canoe through water to get past that part. Not a big deal but a little annoying.

Firewood: Yeah sometimes you can just walk through the woods for about a mile and find some good downed stuff. Sometimes you have to ram shore and just get in there to fill the canoe up. Depends on the area and how much it has been picked over. That area it is probably extremely picked over.

Tarp setups: My tarp setup is extremely lacking... biggest thing I recommend is a guide line and then anchor it down hopefully. It keeps us dry but it isn't as pretty as others that have them on here.

Canoe camping has given me the motivation to learn more knots.

I still have the feeling that I might have missed something and the portage ended too early? Saw a lot of paint and aluminum on those rocks. Maybe in high water it is passable without wading.

Yeah maybe. I was there in October of 2017 and some of that aluminum must have been mine. I don't think you did the portage wrong...and in my experience that is one of the more tricky ones just cause it is soooo shallow.

I knew a half-hitch and a couple of other simple knots but that's it. I learned two new knots before my last trip and practiced them daily, prior. The bowline and the truckers hitch. They were all I needed. (youtube) Bonding moments -> knots to learn/practice with your son. :) If he learns them at a young age I bet he'll never forget how to tie 'em.
Nice trip report. Thanks for sharing.
edit: I paddled that route in June of 2019 and it was navigable without stepping out the canoe. So yes, higher water then.

Big duckling and I did a daddy/daughter trip to Jack and back a few years back when she was 9. One of my most memorable trips. We saw 5 moose on the way to Jack and saw moose multiple times each day while camped on Jack. To top it off we caught a ton of walleye.

Good to know. That makes sense.

That was one of the reports I read. We struck out on the moose though.

Great ages to take kids. Mine were the same ages 5 years ago, and that's when they started to learn more camp duties.

Now it a pleasure to make camp, usually I take the tarp and Nemo, while the kids put up the tent and hammocks. (We don't travel ultra-light) It's wonderful to now break camp in about 30 minutes instead of an hour and a half.
