Just picked myself up a new tent .
Picked up a new 6-person tent for car camping, but is the same as our Kelty Discovery 4 that we bring to the BWCA. Excited for the extra legroom for air mattresses and dogs!
For car camping, we used to go with "Walmart" models of tents, but we love to camp in the shoulder months, and with the wind, and cold, most of those tents, the rain fly did not provide adequate coverage.
Plus the set up on this tent is so darn easy with just two poles, criss cross apple sauce, and you're set!
Just a gear junkie, excited about some new gear.

Nice. Also if you are only going one or less portages in and you know the campsites are large enough sometimes it is worth carrying the big one in for the comfort as well.

I flipped it to "On-topic". It's still gear. :)

Nice Tomcat! The Kelty Discovery 6 was one of the largest in its class for floor area. That, and since we own the (4) and already know how to set it up we thought it'd be a breeze.
Now, conversly I hiked 60-miles of the Superior Hiking Trail with my friend over Labor Day weekend from Hwy 1 to Oberg Mountain, and we used her Big Agnes, HCopper Spur HV UL 2 Tent .
For lightweight, this tent was AMAZING! The way the rain fly attaches and pulls completely away from the tent, you could really lean up next to the edges w/o any water/dew issues. We had hard rain on the first night/morning, and we were fine. Our thermarest/expeds overlaped at the feet, but it was fine. Incredibly easy to set up, and very lightweight at 2 pounds.
If I/we ever decided to ditch the hammock system for lightweight options, I'd for sure consider this set up. It was outstanding.

x2jmorris , true, although I think this sucker is like 16.5 pounds!!!!!
If I'm going cushy in the BWCA, I'm just gonna hammock camp... unless we were to paddle in on a lake such as Sawbill, and camp, on Sawbill, I'd definitely consider that.

Yes the Copper Spur is an awesome tent. I have the UL2 and UL3 but mostly use the UL3 now. Been using it since 2012. It needs to be retreated because the rain fly is no longer hydrophobic. I am currently trying to zero in on the best treatment method...another topic...

Mn Lindsey:
Yeah it is heavy. However my 4 man tent is getting rather small for 2 adults/2 kids/ and a dog. And I think the lightest 6 man is like 11 lbs but costs like 600 dollars :\
The tent you just got might soon become my main tent lol. I really like the one you got and also its trail weight is just under 14lbs ;)

Congrats on the new tent. Looks like it will do you and your family well. Good to see it has adjustable ventilation. Hope to see a picture of yours in a trip report.

x2jmorris: "Now I am getting ads for that tent lol"
Hahaha! I love it!
Yeah I'm really excited to use it. We love our 4, but I totally hear you. We only have 1 kid, but have two dogs, and the extra room sure will be nice.
I too like the option for ventelation! My 4 doesn't have that.
I'll let you guys know how it is after our next camping trip.

SWEET! We love trying out new gear. We just got a couple of MSR tents to try this year and they are AMAZING!! Kelty definitely has great gear. They also designed some of my favorite sleeping bags, too. Have fun camping :)
