This is a lovely moment perfectly told: "The single howl turned in multiple howls and in short order turned into a cacophony of howls, yips and barks. It was so beautiful and close."

Thank you, it was something I won't ever forget. I think it is safe to say it is a lifetime memory for my daughter as well.

No bad memories can be huge for people to want to return. Glad everything went well and that another trip is being planned.

Nice report what a pleasure hearing the wolves. How is the portage from Rice to Hook?

It was longer than I thought it was going to be. It wasn't hard though. I little up and down with a couple step over downed trees. It was just one of those I had in my head was just a little longer than the one from Slim to Rice but it was actually twice as long. Slim to Rice had a couple creek crossings that were a little tricky but once you picked your stepping stones it wasn't bad. There is one bad spot on the Rice to Hook portage in the first third up it there is a slight uphill that has a downed pine with a lot of partial branches that point down. I didn't notice it with the canoe on my head and it wanted to push me off the trail. I saw what it was on the way back. Coming back I saw it but then again I was looking for it too.

Selfsuffi (I love this moniker) - thanks for writing this. So excited to get back to the echo trail area after a long time travelin (other places). Let me know if you're ever up for another paddle and I'll meet you up there! Have you thought about a designated solo (or maybe you already paddle that as well?) When I hear the wolves, I'll think of you and daughter's special time!

Thank you! I will let you know next time I am headed up. I haven't taken a solo trip yet. This last trip was actually going to be a solo until my daughter found out she could get a couple days off work. I couldn't pass up a chance to bring her into the BWCA for the first time. I am planning a solo trip for next year. Just need to figure out where to go. I do like the western side but I haven't been to the eastern side of the BWCA at all so that isn't really a fair assessment. I think the farthest east I have been is Cherry Lake. I hope you really enjoy your trip and that the wolves are still singing.

Always makes me happy to hear about another younger generation person being introduced to the wilderness and loving it.

Glad your daughter’s first trip went well and you shared a special moment that makes her want to return.
