My plans to hit Quetico Lake this week got foiled by a medical issue of my partner’s wife. Thinking about a quick trip the weekend of October 12th. Anyone been up there that late? Advisable if we watch the weather beforehand or foolish?
It's a great time to go, but as you know, weather can be hit or miss. That late in the season, I'd tend to stay on the western side, as it would avoid that long paddle back west if camped down on the eastern side.
It's not unusual to get big, nasty winds west/northwest winds this time of year, so staying on the west side (or even heading up towards Cirrus) would make it easier to get out if things get unpleasant.
I've taken quite a number of Q trips starting after th 15th of October- often more than ten nights. Wool is your friend. Make sure you have a good insulated sleeping pad. Remember it takes a lot of insulation to stay warm sitting in a chair when it's in the thirties.
Nobody exists on purpose, nobody belongs anywhere, everybody’s going to die.
I bring 2 full sets of clothing assuming I could fall in with coat on so have full back up. Never needed but 50 F water and 37 F freezing rain would be your demise if can't get warm.
